Networking for life-long learning in graduate education

Networking is a new term for educators. It identifies a process where people and resources are engaged through intentional acts based upon acquired skills. The term is closely associated with self-directed learning and can serve as a collaborative rather than a competitive educational principle. This article examines the applicability of networking for graduate education, including a demonstration of uses, and the identification of skills to be learned by the successful networker.     

A design for the implementation of cooperative education in the liberal arts: Cooperative studies at the university of Lethbridge,Alberta, Canada

Cooperative education in the liberal arts has a history, is triving in the present, and can look to a promising future. However, in order to move beyond the traditional concepts and classical models, postsecondary liberal arts institutions not only will have to look to present models and experimental formats, but also will have to assess their own idiosyncratic variables and develop appropriate personalized frames of reference. The methods developed at the University of Lethbridge reflect the committment to the criterion of academic quality, high faculty input and participation, on-site supervision, and an optimal range of vocational experiences recognized through the awarding of significant amounts of degree credit. In conjunction with these qualities is the university-wide committment to a small and personalized approach based upon student-developed learning objectives.All three authors are involved in the Cooperative Studies Program at the University of Lethbridge.     

The manager of academic outreach: A role of consequence to university survival and growth

University managers of academic outreach need more than commitment, experience, and administrative ability to ensure effective delivery of outreach programming and services. They also need outstanding skills in communication, persuasion, and negotiation to win and maintain active faculty/administrator support for outreach activities. Failure to generate such support will make it impossible for outreach managers to deliver effectively and consistently on the promise and implications of the outreach concept.
