ABSTRACTStudents’ emotions are closely tied to their self-esteem, self-concept, and feelings of self-efficacy. Academic self-concept is specific to the educational context, so a student may be engaged in some academic pursuits but not connect to others. Disidentification from an academic pursuit usually causes withdrawal of effort. Anxiety is the emotion that has received the most attention from educational psychologists and librarians, but students also experience surprise, curiosity, enyoyment, confusion, frustration, and boredom. Confusion can be beneficial to learning if it is resolved before one feels overly frustrated. 相似文献
We studied the use of computer readers, and especially their speech synthesis component, as a compensatory tool for adults
with dyslexia. We first explored the enhancement of reading skills in a group of college students and working adults. Their
unaided reading was very slow, and most participants in the study could sustain reading for only short periods. Although their
timed comprehension was poor, their untimed comprehension was above average. The computer reader enhanced the reading rate
and comprehension of most participants and enabled them to sustain reading longer. The difference between aided and unaided
reading rate was inversely proportional to the unaided rate. Slower readers experienced greater enhancement than faster ones.
The enhancement of comprehension was also inversely proportional to unaided scores, and good predictions of the enhancement
were obtained from multiple regression models that included scores from specific standard tests of auditory and visual cognitive
abilities. We also explored the use of computer readers in the workplace and show through case studies that their use can
have important positive effects on individual careers and self-confidence when specific conditions exist. Finally, we investigated
the use of computer readers to supplement an adult remediation program. The readers allowed and motivated the students to
read more and, as a result, to progress more rapidly.

A national curriculum comprising statements of attainment at different levels must be underpinned by some idea of “progression”
in learning. Questions arise as to the nature and meaning of progression. To gain a deeper insight into how children progress
in their understanding of science, this research involves the construction and testing of a hypothetical learning sequence
for the topic of forces. This interim report explains how children aged 7 to 13 are being interviewed to explore their explanations
of phenomena involving forces. These explanations will be mapped onto the sequence to provide a multi-dimensional model of
progression.

This qualitative study investigates the career placement concerns of international graduate students returning to their home countries, heading to other countries, or remaining in the United States after their education. Using a phenomenological framework, structured interviews were conducted with 24 participants (i.e., 18 international students, 1 naturalized status student, 3 faculty members, and 2 career counselors). Assertions that emerged suggested that the students possess diverse career plans influenced by numerous unique factors. Major, gender, and geography were not salient factors affecting the students' career placement needs. Students used contacts in their academic fields far more than they used campus career services, due to negative perceptions of or limited services that the center could provide. Based on these findings, more outreach to the international student community and collaboration between the career counseling and placement center and other campus departments are recommended. 相似文献
This study examines the relationships between neonatal sleep respiratory instability and infant development. A group of 122 full-term healthy infants was observed during a nap within the first and fourth weeks of life. During each nap, a continuous polygraphic recording was obtained of respiratory activity and extraocular movements. The relative frequency and average duration of apneic pauses (greater than or equal to 2 sec) in each testing session for an infant were employed to calculate a measure of respiratory instability (PSA4) previously found to be related to the occurrence of prolonged sleep apnea. 28 of the infants in this study were maintained at home on apnea monitors. The Bayley Scales of Infant Development were administered to each infant at approximately 9 months of age. Comparisons of infants with high versus low PSA4 values and of monitored versus unmonitored infants were not strongly distorted by imbalances in birth weight, sex, race, birth order, method of feeding, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) sibship, parental education, age at developmental assessment, and developmental tester. Those with increased respiratory instability (PSA4 greater than or equal to -0.04) within the first week of life averaged significantly lower in mental and psychomotor development. Utilization of home apnea monitors was not significantly associated with developmental scores. 相似文献
This study discusses the needs and challenges associated with Latino males’ treatment in public schools. The primary concern is how nationally, only one in two Latino males graduate from U.S. high schools (Schott Foundation for Public Education in Black Lives Matter: The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males, http://blackboysreport.org/, 2015). However, a growing body of research has emerged, heightening Latino males’ social and academic needs in traditional K-12 educational settings. In this paper, we highlight the need to focus on alternative school settings through the narratives of four Latino males enrolled in two alternative public schools. Our findings describe the nuances in alternative schooling experience for Latino males. It explores the school context's differences to (re)engage youth back into school and the various factors that shape their future aspirations. We discuss implications for research and practice to improve alternative schools' conditions to better serve Latino males in this overlooked sector in the educational pipeline.
Thirty years ago in this journal, Aylett Royall Cox reported on the development of Alphabetic Phonics, a revision of the existing Orton Gillingham treatment for children with dyslexia. This paper continues that discussion and reports on the evolution of that curriculum as it is represented in a comprehensive dyslexia treatment program informed by intervention research. The paper describes the curriculum and reports data from a hospital-based learning disabilities clinic that provides qualified support for treatment efficacy and the value of added comprehension instruction. The results are then discussed in the context of current and future issues in dyslexia intervention. 相似文献
