Recent research in concrete analysis and design has revealed that the shear capacity contributed by concrete correlates well with the neutral axis depth. While nonlinear analysis calculation of the neutral axis depth is trivial for reinforced concrete beams, it is iterative for prestressed concrete beams and does not lend itself to straightforward hand calculations. In this study, a program is developed to simulate the response of prestressed concrete rectangular sections subjected to monotonic bending taking into account cracking, yielding and ultimate states. This program is used to benchmark a simplified analytical procedure devised to perform the same task by hand. Accordingly, critical observations made to a large pool of experimental and analytical results reveal that the moment-curvature and moment-extreme fiber strain can be accurately modeled as trilinear relationships. The four key points that define the trilinear functions (initial, cracking, yielding and ultimate) may be computed analytically from simple equations derived based on consistent assumptions with the true behavior. Once the simplified analysis is performed, the computation of the neutral axis depth becomes a simple hand calculation. A parametric study was performed to further simplify the analytical procedure by computing the four key points that define the trilinear functions through linear relationships that were derived based on regression analysis of a large number of beam solutions. The neutral axis depth was calculated using the analytical and the simplified procedures for three beams with different ratios of prestressing steel and concrete strength. The results compared well with the iterative numerical procedure.  相似文献

The effect of charismatic leadership on organizational performance is contested. Yet despite the lack of consistent evidence of the value of charismatic leadership to organizations, presidential searches have increasingly favored charismatic candidates. This study shows how organizational identity mediates the relationship between charismatic leadership and organizational performance. Among religious colleges, but not among private colleges considered overall, there is a positive relationship between presidents’ charismatic leadership and the number of applications for enrollment and the amount of financial donations colleges receive. This suggests that among organizations with atypical identities, charismatic leadership can be interpreted as a meaningful signal of organizational performance.  相似文献

This article describes the involvement of Roman Catholics in the Religious Education Association during the first 50 years of its existence. It examines attitudes of Protestants toward Catholics expressed in journal articles, convention speeches, and archival material. It presents the contributions of Roman Catholics at conventions and in journal articles during this period. The article contends that Roman Catholics deepened involvement in the REA went a long way to making the association a multifaith organization. The history also documents changes in Roman Catholic viewpoints and emphases over the period of these 50 years from an exclusive concern with schooling to a broader view of the educational mission of the church and from education in an authoritarian and dogmatic spirit to one slightly more open to outside influences and cautiously willing to cooperate with other religious groups.  相似文献

This essay looks at Ethnic Studies activism in Arizona through a rhetorical lens in order to highlight epistemological aspects of activities such as a high school Chicano Literature class, Roberto “Dr. Cintli” Rodriguez’s journalism, and student activism to defend the Mexican-American Studies Department. Taking rhetoric’s premise that language is at the center of knowledge construction (epistemology), this essay turns to Chicano activism as a language that produces knowledge differently. The participation of students, particularly in the indigenous spiritual runs, is an important example of the traditionally central role of students to the field of Chicano Studies. Runs also work inwardly to strengthen participants and build group cohesion. These practices, like Chicano and Ethnic Studies in general, constitute a critical dialectical way of thinking, a disruptive opposition to traditional rationalities that tend to gloss over colonialist histories and justify status quo racial inequalities. Thinking about these activities rhetorically allows readers to understand how the participants communicate with a wider audience and how they generate knowledge uniquely around Chicano Studies.  相似文献

In the last decades theories that emphasise visitors’experience as the key element in the process of meaning‐making have influenced art education in museums considerably. However, there is remarkably little evidence in practice that museums shape their exhibits and educational tools by the actual experiences of visitors. Because museum education is still too much knowledge‐based, people often do not come to understanding or engagement of thinking. This article demonstrates this inconsistency and its consequences based on visitors’conversations during a museum visit while looking at contemporary art. In order to engage visitors into their own thinking and create lasting experiences, the article also investigates Dewey's ideas about experienced‐based education and inquiry learning. The study especially shows that experiences felt as obstacles for interpretation are extremely suitable to stimulate, deepen and improve visitors’engagement in the inquiry cycle.  相似文献

Researchers have hypothesized four levels of instructional dialogue and claimed that teachers can improve children's language development by incorporating these dialogue levels in their classrooms. It has also been hypothesized that enhancing children's early language development enhances children's later reading development. This quasi-experimental research study investigated both of these hypotheses using a collaborative service delivery model for Grade 1 children with language difficulties from a socially and economically disadvantaged urban community in Australia. Comparing the end-of-year reading achievement scores for the 57 children who received the language intervention with those of the 59 children in the comparison group, the findings from this research are supportive of both hypotheses. The interrelationships between learning difficulties, reading difficulties, and language difficulties are discussed along with children's development in vocabulary, use of memory strategies and verbal reasoning, and the need for multidimensional programming.  相似文献

An investigation into nonperiodic Lamé functions is presented. Those functions are given in series form for the even and odd Dirichlet and Neumann problems. Results are shown for the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. An application of the Lamé functions in an analytic study of electromagnetic diffraction by a perfectly conducting elliptic cone is presented.  相似文献
