By expanding Bourdieusian concepts of class ethos and habitus in the field of racial analysis, the article closely examines the shaping of a racial/ethnic ethos among a particular group
of Chinese Americans. The findings suggest that the community ethos is affected both by a self-consciousness about the positioning
of Chinese Americans in the racial hierarchy in the U.S., and by high educational and economic aspirations associated with
the class status of the community. Such a distinct community ethos is materialized in the daily practices in the community,

Despite the laudable intent of various educational initiatives in raising the achievement level of all children, limited progress
has been made. In an effort to diminish the achievement gap of students of color, some researchers have examined the cultural
relevancy of the curriculum in promoting student achievement. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the preferences
of African American children toward culturally relevant and non-culturally relevant lessons, through a six-week series of
lessons in an American History classroom. Critical Race Theory and Racial Identity Development provided the theoretical underpinnings
of this study. This study takes place in an ethnically diverse high school in Colorado. Culturally relevant lessons were rich
in oral traditions, music, historical connections, and a structured culturally relevant field trip. Non-culturally relevant
lessons were administered devoid of cultural referents, and utilized the existing curriculum guide. Study results revealed
statistically significant findings for African American children’s preferences for culturally relevant lessons. These lessons
were found relevant to their culture when administered by a culturally responsive and caring teacher. Recommendations are
made for educators and administrators in promoting achievement through culturally relevant lessons and curriculum. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of impaired reading skills and visual discomfort on the reading rate and comprehension of university students when reading texts presented at a high school (Grade 9) or university (Grade 12) level of difficulty. Groups included impaired readers (n=18) and normal readers with (n=13) or without visual discomfort (n=19). Regardless of text difficulty the impaired reader group had a significantly slower reading rate and poorer comprehension than the normal reader control group. However, when reading rate and comprehension were compared at the assessed reading level of each group, no group differences were found. The normal reading visual discomfort group had poorer reading comprehension than other normal readers with presentation of university‐level text only. It was concluded that poor word decoding skills may exacerbate comprehension difficulties in impaired readers. In contrast, the comprehension difficulties found for normal readers with visual discomfort occurred because of the somatic and perceptual difficulties induced with exposure to the repetitive striped patterns found on text pages. The types of strategy needed to increase the reading efficiency and produce greater academic success in university students with impaired reader skills or visual discomfort are discussed. 相似文献

Melvin Burgess has gained a reputation as an enfant terrible, whose writing tackles topics and presents attitudes which are controversial in literature for adolescents. Kimberley Reynolds
cites him as an author whose work demonstrates that “writing about sex, sexuality and relationships between the sexes [is]
one of the most radically changed areas in contemporary children’s literature.” Reynolds argues that novels depicting teenage
sexuality no longer focus on socialising teenagers into adult-approved behaviours. Yet changes in literature are never fully
“radical”; they always build on established traditions. This article examines the ways in which Burgess uses the motif of
animal transformation in Tiger Tiger and Lady: My Life as a Bitch to maintain the prevailing view of adolescent carnality as a deviant variation of “proper,” adult sexuality, whilst celebrating

This article examines the connections between posthumanism and narrative form in Philip Pullman’s Clockwork. Beginning with an account of Pullman’s materialism, it argues that the novel represents consciousness and agency as emergent
properties of matter, a position that manifests itself first in the tale’s figurative language and later in the cybernetic
inventions of Dr. Kalmenius. As Pullman effaces the boundaries between animate and inanimate, human and non-human, he generates
uncanny effects that are best understood in terms of the posthuman condition and narrative modes that reject liberal humanist
models of subjectivity. Clockwork’s uncanny elements, metafictive qualities, and distribution of narrative voice across multiple perspectives thus represent
narrative accommodations demanded by the tale’s rejection of the Cartesian mind/body dualism that grounds the liberal humanist
subject. Clockwork’s acceptance of the posthuman condition is, however, incomplete and anxiety-laden, and the fairy-tale transformation of Prince

Objective
We sought to determine the incidence, clinical features, and demographic profile of head injury secondary to suspected child maltreatment (abuse or neglect) in Canada to help inform the development and evaluation of prevention programs for abusive head injuries.Methods
From March 1, 2005 to February 28, 2008, an average of 2,545 paediatricians and paediatric subspecialists were surveyed monthly through the established network of the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program. We calculated incidence rates using the number of confirmed cases over the product of the duration of the study (3 years) and population estimates by age group.Results
There were 220 confirmed cases of head injury from suspected child maltreatment. The annual incidence rate was 14.1 per 100,000 for children less than 1 year of age and 1.4 per 100,000 for those less than 15 years. Seventy three percent (141) of cases involved infants less than 12 months of age and 52% (100) of cases involved infants less than 6 months of age. Seventy-five percent (165) of cases presented to the emergency room. With regard to outcome, 12% (27) of cases resulted in death and 45% (75) of survivors had neurological sequelae at discharge. Thirty percent (67) of all cases, as well as 30% (8) of deaths were previously known to child welfare authorities.Conclusion
This study provides an estimate of the rate of head injury secondary to suspected child maltreatment in Canada. The young age and poor medical outcomes of those involved highlights the need for prevention efforts that are implemented early in life. Given that a significant percentage of injured infants and children were already known to child welfare authorities, the study also highlights the need to establish and evaluate additional preventive efforts for parents and caregivers already in the child welfare system. 相似文献948.

The development and consequences of licensure for counseling psychologists in Taiwan are presented to promote cross-cultural
awareness surrounding issues in the counseling psychology profession. The national licensure statute for counseling psychologists
in Taiwan was established by the Taiwanese Legislature in 2001. While the licensing system marked an important milestone,
it also brought forth a number of internal and external conflicts to the counseling psychology profession in Taiwan. The paper
consists of four parts. First, it introduces the development of the Counseling Psychology profession and licensure in Taiwan.
Second, challenges triggered by the statute of counseling psychologists are considered. Third, the profession’s strategic
response to these challenges is addressed. Finally, the profession’s ongoing post-licensure development is presented. We hope
this article facilitates further exchanges of initiatives undertaken by international colleagues to consolidate the ethical
