A Matter of Language or Culture: Coverage of the 2004 U.S. Elections on Spanish- and English-Language Television

This article fills a gap in the communication and political science literature by comparing how Spanish- and English-language television stations cover U.S. elections. A content analysis of more than 400 national network news stories and nearly 3,000 local news stories reveals that local and network Spanish-language stations provide less election coverage than their English-language counterparts. Although Spanish-language stations are more likely to focus election coverage on “Latino” issues or interests, the results indicate only moderate differences in how stations in each language frame their election stories, with stations in both languages concentrating more coverage around campaign strategy and the horse race than substantive issues.

Darwin’s Other Bulldog: Charles Kingsley and the Popularisation of Evolution in Victorian England

The nineteenth-century Anglican Priest Charles Kingsley (1819?C1875) was a significant populariser of Darwin??s theory of evolution by natural selection. Kingsley was successful in this regard because he developed such diverse connections throughout his career. In the 1840s he associated with Chartists and radical journalists; in the 1850s and 1860s he moved freely in scientific circles and was elected Fellow of the Linnean Society of London in 1856 and Fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1863. In 1859 he was appointed Chaplain in Ordinary to the Queen. In 1860 the Prince Consort was willing and able to secure Kingsley appointment as the Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University and he subsequently became tutor to the Prince of Wales. Thereafter he was frequently invited into high Victorian Society. A friend of ??Darwin??s Bulldog?? Thomas Huxley, of the eminent geologist Charles Lyell and a correspondent of Darwin, at every turn he sought to promote Darwin??s ideas as theologically orthodox, a life-long campaign in which he was eminently successful.     

The leadership crisis – can Action Learning Questions provide any answers?

This article provides a reflective account of the author's experience over the past 12 years of introducing a structured approach to accredited action learning to corporate organisations. The generic Action Learning Question method is outlined and specific examples of programmes in the financial services/banking and education sector are described. Included is an example of how Action Learning Facilitators have been developed. It is proposed that this approach has a place in supporting leadership development in a period of great uncertainty and change.     

The development and preliminary assessment of a set of video‐taped informative speech models

Guidelines are specified in this article for developing video‐taped informative speech models. Faculty members rated selected video‐taped informative speeches on nine variables and two months later rated nine of the same speeches again. The faculty judges were reliable on their ratings for eight of the nine variables rated during the two sessions. Five of the nine speeches were identified as being representative of one of three significantly different levels of excellence.

前文报导平頦海蛇L.handwickii的毒液含有丰富的磷脂酶A_2(PLA_2,EC3.1.1.4)现采用sephadex G—75凝胶过滤,CM—纤维素及DEAE—纤维素柱层析等步骤,将此酶提纯至SDS —PAGE电泳中仅显一条区带并测出其相应分子量为12000,在聚丙烯酰胺凝胶IBF中测得此酶PI为5.5,氨基酸组份分析结果表明酶分子中含有较多的半胱氨酸和门冬氨酸残基。此酶水解卵磷脂的产物经TLC鉴定为溶血卵磷脂,平颌海蛇蛇毒PLA_2在pH5.0～8.0范围稳定,最适pH为7.0;在pH6.0条件下,经90℃保温10min仍保持大部价活力,此酶可被Ca~(2+),Na~+,Mg~(2+)等阳离子激活,而受EDTA—Na_2,Zn~(3+),Cu~(2+)和柠檬酸、草酸等阴离子抑制。通过紫外吸收光谱及喇曼光谱的观察,初步研究了此酶的分子构型及某些基团的性质,最后,对已被研究的三种海蛇(平頦海蛇和L.Semifa—rciata及E.Schistosa)的PLA_2的某些性质进行了比较并作了简单的讨论。     

Finding the Target: An Experiment in Benchmarking

In an effort to maximize a dwindling materials budget, the University of North Texas Libraries have been investigating new methods of evaluating purchasing decisions. One such investigation was into the possibility of using cost data to establish internal benchmarks for acceptable price points. The hope was to create benchmarks for specific subjects and formats to aid staff in evaluating new resources, assessing existing resources, and negotiating pricing with vendors. This article will walk through the steps taken to create these benchmarks, the efforts taken to implement them, and conclusions regarding their feasibility as an ongoing tool for collection development.
