This paper firstly identifies the major legacies inherited by the post-colonial government in Hong Kong, with reference to the key features of access, control and curriculum. Subsequently we examine the state's attempts to reconcile the tension between its quest for legitimacy and for stability. Two dimensions of education, namely the process of educational policy making and the nature of citizenship promoted through the school curriculum, are analysed in terms of the conceptions of civic participation and identity promoted and implemented by the state. In conclusion we point to the shift in the policy making process and the strengthening of policy actions designed to promote the state's conception of civic identity. 相似文献

This paper focuses on the extent to which the development of ESL (English as a Second Language) word recognition skills mimics
similar trajectories in same-aged EL1 (English as a First Language) children, and the extent to which phonological processing
skills and rapid naming can be used to predict word recognition performance in ESL children. Two cohorts of Grade 1 ESL and
EL1 primary-level children were followed for two consecutive years. Results indicated that vocabulary knowledge, a measure
of language proficiency, and nonverbal intelligence were not significant predictors of word recognition in either group. Yet,
by considering individual differences in phonological awareness and rapid naming, it was possible to predict substantial amounts
of variance on word recognition performance six months and one year later in both language groups. Commonality analyses indicated
that phonological awareness and rapid naming contributed unique variance to word recognition performance. Moreover, the profiles
of not at-risk children in the EL1 and ESL groups were similar on all but the oral language measure, where EL1 children had
the advantage. In addition, EL1 and ESL profiles of children who had word-recognition difficulty were similar, with low performance
on rapid naming and phonological awareness. Results indicate that these measures are reliable indicators of potential reading

The aim of this study was to analyse whether there are differences in bone mass in girls playing different sports. Two hundred girls (10.6 ± 1.5 years old, Tanner stages I–III) participated in the study and were divided into groups of 40 (swimmers, soccer players, basketball players, handball players and controls). Bone mineral content and bone mineral density (BMD) (whole body and hip) were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The degree of sexual development was determined using Tanner test, and physical activity habits were recorded through a questionnaire designed ad hoc for this research. Girls were divided by pubertal stage and the type of sport. In the prepubertal group, intertrochanteric BMD was significantly higher in both handball and soccer players compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, in the pubertal group, total BMD, mean arms BMD, pelvis BMD, femoral neck BMD, intertrochanteric BMD and Ward’s triangle BMD were significantly higher in soccer and handball players compared with the control group (P < 0.05), and the swimmers showed significantly higher values in the mean arms BMD compared with the control group (P < 0.01). Our data suggest that sport practice during puberty, especially in activities that support the body weight, may be an important factor in achieving a high peak bone mass and improving bone health in girls. 相似文献

This mixed methods investigation specifically examined Latino high school adolescents’ perceptions of teacher behaviors that demonstrate caring. A chi-square test was conducted to analyze the frequency of responses, and focus group interviews were conducted to expand on the results. The data indicated that although Latino male students were as likely to perceive the same behaviors Latina female students perceived as important or very important, a higher percentage of female students rated the same items as important. The kinematics of a badminton racket during a smash stroke was observed in this study with the purpose of investigating stroke
dynamics and racket behaviour. Motion capture measurements of the racket during several smash strokes performed by three players
of different skill levels indicated a clear increase in racket velocity at impact with increasing skill level. Variations
between translational and rotational contributions to the impact speed could also be seen between the players. The advanced
player produced a much higher peak angular velocity and also relied much less on translation, with a translational velocity
of only 8% of the total velocity versus the 20% for the recreational player. It is proposed that, as an alternative to shuttlecock
speeds, racket head speed measurements can be used as an indicator of performance, and can also provide some insight into
