A sample of 22, 923 students who had taken the SAT and the GRE General Test was classified by the four general undergraduate fields of study and by sex. The authors performed several analyses to determine the degree of differential impact that sex and field of study might have on GRE-Verbal, GRE-Quantitative, and GRE-Analytical scores after controlling on SAT-Verbal and SAT-Mathematical scores. They found, first, that the correlations of SAT-Verbal with GRE-Verbal scores and SAT-Mathematical with GRE-Quantitative scores were extremely high, .86 in the total sample and ranging from the low to middle .80s in the eight subgroups. The impact of curriculum and sex, after controlling on SAT scores, was found to be low on GRE- Verbal scores but relatively high on GRE-Quantitative scores, with students in heavily quantitative fields enjoying an advantage over their peers in less quantitative fields of study. The impact was moderate on GRE-Analytical scores. Further studies designed to "purify" the fields of study and include only clearly verbal fields and clearly mathematical fields showed small additional impact. An additional study indicated a generally slight effect of the institution attended on GRE-Quantitative scores after controlling for sex, major field of study, and initial ability. 相似文献

Harris Interactive(R) conducted Listening to Mothers II: Report of the Second National U.S. Survey of Women's Childbearing Experiences on behalf of Childbirth Connection. The survey consisted of 1,373 online interviews and 200 telephone interviews with women who had given birth in U.S. hospitals in 2005, with weighting of data to reflect the target population. There has been a considerable growth in the use of flexible methods of delivery for workplace learning and development. However, in designing programmes of flexible learning there is often the assumption that learners will exhibit uniformity in the ways in which they process and organise information (cognitive style), in their predispositions towards particular learning formats and media (instructional preferences) and the conscious actions they employ to deal with the demands of specific learning situations (learning strategies). In adopting such a stance one runs the risk of ignoring important aspects of individual differences in styles, preferences and strategies. Our purpose in this paper will be to: (i) consider some aspects of individual difference that are pertinent to the delivery of flexible learning in the workplace; (ii) identify some of the challenges that extant differences in styles and preferences between individuals may raise for instructional designers and learning facilitators; (iii) suggest ways in which models of flexible learning design and delivery may acknowledge and accommodate individual differences in styles and preferences through the use of an appropriate range of instructional design, learning and support strategies. 相似文献

In this study, White preservice teachers engaged in a dialogue circle around issues of race and racism in the classroom. Evidence indicated a need to reevaluate and diversify the ways in which each participant embodied and enacted Whiteness. The participants are compared to generalizations of White preservice teachers found in the literature. Findings are presented in the form of racial development biographies co-written with the participants. The relationship between social behavior, as measured by the School Social Behavior Scales (SSBS), and self-concept, as measured by the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC), was studied. Subjects included 41 public school students in Grades 5 and 6. These subjects were rated on the SSBS by their classroom teachers and also completed the SPPC as a self-report measure. A number of significant positive relationships were found between the Social Competence scores of the SSBS and the SPPC self-concept scores. Relationships between the Problem Behavior scores of the SSBS and the SPPC scores were extremely weak, and none of the obtained coefficients was statistically significant. The pattern of associations identified through this investigation provides support for the criterion-related validity of both the SSBS and SPPC, and raises some interesting questions regarding the relationship between social behavior and self-concept in children. 相似文献
