Investigating pre-service teacher motivation across cultures using the Teachers’ Ten Statements Test

Motivations for choosing teaching as a career were investigated in 200 pre-service teachers from Canada and Oman. We used a novel structured qualitative approach and two theoretical models to analyze how pre-service teacher career-choice motivation varied according to cultural context. The results of the study showed that Canadian participants made more self-references, and expressed higher levels of individual-focused motivation and social utility value as career motivators than did Omani participants. Participants from Oman expressed greater endorsement of teaching as a fallback career and higher levels of socio-cultural influences than Canadian participants. This article shows how Yup’ik cosmology, epistemology, and everyday practice have implications for the teaching of school
mathematics. Math in a Cultural Context (MCC) has a long–term collaborative relationship with Yup’ik elders and experienced
Yup’ik teachers. Because of this long–term ethnographically–oriented relationship, the authors – both insiders and an outsider
– have been able to understand the mathematical implications of everyday Yup’ik practice. As the article demonstrates, body
proportional measuring and symmetry/splitting are two generative solution strategies used by Yup’ik elders in solving everyday
problems. We argue that proportional measuring coupled with symmetry/splitting can provide school mathematics with an alternative

Abstract Little research has examined ultra-endurance swimming performances. The 'English Channel Swim', where swimmers have to cover a distance of 32?km between England and France represents a unique long-distance, open-water, sea-swimming challenge, and each year swimmers from all over the world try to succeed in this challenge. The best times in minutes and the nationality of successful men and women swimmers were analysed from 1900 to 2010. A total of 1,533 swimmers (455 women and 1,078 men) from more than 40 countries have successfully completed the 'English Channel Swim'. Great Britain was the country most represented, with 38% of the total, followed by the United States with 20%. Swim speed has increased progressively for both sexes (P?0.001) but was lower for women than for men (0.68 ± 0.15?m · s(-1) vs 0.71?±?0.16?m · s(-1) respectively, P?0.01). However, the best annual performances did not differ between the sexes (men: 0.89?±?0.20?m · s(-1); women: 0.84?±?0.18?m · s(-1), P?>?0.05). The results suggest that the performance of women open-water ultra-distance swimmers may be similar to that of men. Further studies investigating anthropometrical and physiological characteristics of open-water ultra-swimmers are needed to compare men's and women's open-water ultra-swim performances. 相似文献

This qualitative study examined the development of bilingual and bicultural preservice teachers’ beliefs and attitudes about
social justice and its role in the education of language minority children. Fraser’s in Redistribution or recognition: a political-philosophical
exchange. Verso, New York, (2003) perspectival dualist framework, which calls for the consideration of both the distribution of resources and the recognition
of cultural identity, was applied to the investigation of participants’ social justice claims. In addition to observing these
preservice teachers in their courses and conducting interviews, the researchers also analyzed the teaching practices of their
bilingual-bicultural professors. Findings indicate that bilingual teacher candidates need to have space and support for reflecting
upon the conflicting meanings they might ascribe to experiences and insights gained through the occupation of different identity
positions. Bilingual-bicultural university professors’ ability to recognize and legitimate the experiences and perspectives

The aim of this study was to examine the claim that reductions of 8-18% in submaximal oxygen consumption (VO2) could be due to changing components on a Monark ergometer, from standard pedals without toe-clips or straps (flat pedals) to racing pedals of that era, which included toe-clips and straps (toe-clip pedals). This previously untested assertion was evaluated using 11 males (mean age 22.3 years, s= 1.2; height 1.82 m, s= 0.07; body mass 82.6 kg, s= 8.8) who completed four trials in a randomized, counterbalanced order at 60 rev min(-1) on a Monark cycle ergometer. Two trials were completed on flat pedals and two trials on toe-clip pedals. The Douglas bag method was used to assess VO2 and gross efficiency during successive 5-min workloads of 60, 120, 180, and 240 W. The mean VO2 was 2.1% higher for toe-clip pedals than flat pedals and there was a 99% probability that toe-clip pedals would not result in an 8% lower VO2. These results indicate that toe-clip pedals do not reduce VO2. 相似文献

Ingesting carbohydrate plus protein following prolonged exercise may restore exercise capacity more effectively than ingestion of carbohydrate alone. The objective of the present study was to determine whether this potential benefit is a consequence of the protein fraction per se or simply due to the additional energy it provides. Six active males participated in three trials, each involving a 90-min treadmill run at 70% maximal oxygen uptake (run 1) followed by a 4-h recovery. At 30-min intervals during recovery, participants ingested solutions containing: (1) 0.8 g carbohydrate x kg body mass (BM)(-1) h(-1) plus 0.3 g kg(-1) h(-1) of whey protein isolate (CHO-PRO); (2) 0.8 g carbohydrate x kg BM(-1) h(-1) (CHO); or (3) 1.1 g carbohydrate x kg BM(-1) h(-1) (CHO-CHO). The latter two solutions matched the CHO-PRO solution for carbohydrate and for energy, respectively. Following recovery, participants ran to exhaustion at 70% maximal oxygen uptake (run 2). Exercise capacity during run 2 was greater following ingestion of CHO-PRO and CHO-CHO than following ingestion of CHO (P< or = 0.05) with no significant difference between the CHO-PRO and CHO-CHO treatments. In conclusion, increasing the energy content of these recovery solutions extended run time to exhaustion, irrespective of whether the additional energy originated from sucrose or whey protein isolate. 相似文献

With a central focus on thecultural contexts of Pacific island societies,this essay examines the entanglement ofcolonial power relations in local recordkeepingpractices. These cultural contexts include theon-going exchange between oral and literatecultures, the aftermath of colonialdisempowerment and reassertion of indigenousrights and identities, the difficulty ofmaintaining full archival systems in isolated,resource-poor micro-states, and the drivinginfluence of development theory. The essayopens with a discussion of concepts ofexploration and evangelism in cross-culturalanalysis as metaphors for archival endeavour. It then explores the cultural exchanges betweenoral memory and written records, orality, andliteracy, as means of keeping evidence andremembering.
