This short essay proposes establishing faculty-led advising seminars for advisees in order to increase the effectiveness of the academic advising system. Through the seminars, the advising function would be integrated into the course-credit system, thus enhancing the perceived importance of advising for faculty and students alike. Also through the seminars, students would systematically study and reflect on the nature of higher education, thereby creating firmer bases for choices. This article deals with a worldwide movement called short-cycle higher education - a level of education placed between post-compulsory/post-secondary education and university degree completion. Like most developing countries in the world, there is a huge gap in opportunities to access quality science education between students from the high- and low-socioeconomic strata of Philippine society. In establishing its own science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) high school, despite limited public funding in 1964, the government embarked on a hopeful project for continuously building up its scientific and technological work force to support modern economic development. The initial focus on elite talent development, however, eventually had to give way to legislative reforms that address issues of social equity. Greater accessibility for scholarships by underprivileged students in the provinces was accomplished, first, through the regionalization of its admission system and then, later, through its transformation into a network of science high schools across the nation. This investigation examined the effects of three pre-match and half-time cooling manoeuvres on physical performance and associated physiological and perceptual responses in eight University soccer players during a non-motorised treadmill based individualised soccer-specific simulation [intermittent soccer performance test (iSPT)] at 30°C. Four randomised experimental trials were completed; following 30-min (pre-match) and 15-min (half-time) cooling manoeuvres via (1) ice slurry ingestion (SLURRY); (2) ice-packs placed on the quadriceps and hamstrings (PACKS); (3) mixed-methods (MM; PACKS and SLURRY concurrently); or no-cooling (CON). In iSPT first half, a moderate increase in total (Mean?±?Standard Deviation: 108?±?57 m, qualitative inference: most likely, Cohen’s d: 0.87, 90%CL: ±0.31), high-speed (56?±?46 m, very likely, 0.68?±?0.38) and variable run (15?±?5 m, very likely, 0.81?±?0.47) distance covered was reported in MM compared with CON. Additionally, pre-match reductions in thermal sensation (–1.0?±?0.5, most likely, –0.91?±?0.36), rectal (–0.6?±?0.1°C, very likely, –0.86?±?0.35) and skin temperature (–1.1?±?0.3°C, very likely, –0.88?±?0.42) continued throughout iSPT first half. Physical performance during iSPT first half was unaltered in SLURRY and PACKS compared to CON. Rectal temperature was moderately increased in SLURRY at 45-min (0.2?±?0.1°C, very likely, 0.67?±?0.36). Condition did not influence any measure in iSPT second half compared to CON. Only MM pre-match cooling augmented physical performance during iSPT first half, likely due to peripheral and central thermoregulatory factors favourably influencing first half iSPT performance. This paper contains the results of experiments performed by members of the Signal Corps Research Laboratory, Bureau of Standards, in an attempt to develop a method or methods of signal transmission over submarine cables which would permit of a more effective use of existing cable systems.In the method proposed and developed, signals are transmitted by means of alternating currents simultaneously with the normal battery of direct-current operation of the cable. Currents of several different frequencies may be used, reserving a given frequency for each message, and by tuning or equivalent methods at the receiving end these messages may be separated, so that the simultaneous transmission of a number of messages is redered possible.Accurate determination of the fundamental physical properties of a particular cable for different frequencies has been accompalished, and the results are given herewith. From these physical properties accurate calculations for any length of cable can be made, so that the design of proper apparatus becomes purely a laboratory problem.Actual trial of the proposed alternating-current method was made covering distances up to approximately 700 kilometres, with results which were in all cases completely satisfactory, indicating that the method is an entirely feasible one, and one which will render cables of this length, and undoubtedly of several times this length, much more useful. 相似文献

This study aimed at experimentally investigating the moderating role of instructional conceptions on the effectiveness of
powerful learning environments (PLE) designed in line with the four-component instructional design model (4C/ID-model). The
study also investigated the influence of learning in a 4C/ID PLE on students’ instructional conceptions. To achieve its goal,
a study with a one by one by two pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design was done. Three functionally equivalent classes
of students from three similar (secondary technical) schools were randomly exposed to three different treatments. The participants
consisted of 129 (47, 41, 41) students. The treatments were one control group with a regular method of teaching, and two experimental
groups: a 4C/ID PLE with ICT, and a 4C/ID PLE without ICT. The instructional conceptions questionnaire was administered both
in the pre-and the post-test to assess students’ instructional conceptions. Pre- and post-tests contain retention and transfer
items. Technical teachers were trained to implement the interventions. In contrast to expectation, findings show no moderating
effects of students’ instructional conceptions on the learning environments. Finally, the results indicate that students’
instructional conceptions positively change after implementation of the three interventions. The theoretical, research, and
practical implications of the results for the instructional design and technology community as well as educational practice

How are secondary accounts of bad scientific practice constructed? How do they engage with the primary data produced by bad scientists? And what happens to those primary data as generations of secondary accounts purporting to describe them accumulate? This paper addresses such questions via a case study of Dr. Hong, a microbiologist accused of bad scientific practice by numerous secondary accounts of the 2003 SARS outbreak. Bringing Hong's own account of his own actions into dialogue with one of the most influential secondary accounts of his actions, the paper highlights the gross disparity between the two. Having argued that the rhetorical structuring of the secondary account is, ultimately, responsible for Hong's characterisation as a bad scientist, it then moves to explore how subsequent accounts developed their own characterisations. What becomes clear is that as secondary accounts began feeding off one another, references to Hong's account disappeared. Aided by the concepts of the vanishing and the phantasm, the paper concludes with a consideration of how this process left Hong's work with a very peculiar form of existence. 相似文献
