Kinematically mediated effects of sport shoe design: a review

One prominent pattern emerging from a review of the literature on sport shoes and biomechanics is the observation that many effects are the indirect result of shoe-induced adjustments in movement, i.e. a particular shoe characteristic elicits a kinematic adaptation which in turn has secondary consequences on kinetics and on injury and performance. For example, in addition to its variable effects on peak forces, cushioning system design has been shown to alter electromyographic patterns and to affect knee flexion during foot strike and affect indirectly the economy of running. Mediolateral stability as measured by rearfoot kinematics is strongly influenced by shoe design features such as heel lift, and sole hardness and geometry. The frictional properties of the shoe and surface interface have also been shown to affect kinematics in a way that in turn affects the recorded frictional forces themselves. Such kinematically mediated responses are the most provocative result of studies of the biomechanical effects of footwear. It is becoming apparent that the shoe can be a powerful tool for manipulating human movement. The abundance of shoe design possibilities coupled with the body's tendency to adjust in predictable ways to shoe mechanical characteristics have given us a new way to manipulate human kinematics and kinetics, as well as a convenient model for studying biomechanical adaptation.     

From traditional to nontraditional scheduling: Planning for Saturday students

Some colleges have responded to adult students nontraditional scheduling needs by expanding traditional program offerings to Saturday times. In 1984, a survey of Saturday students was conducted at one such college, a two year University of Wisconsin Center in Waukesha County, to generate information useful in institutional planning and scheduling. Results of the survey of 158 Saturday students revealed that participants were older, employed full time and, more often, women. Forty percent were new or re-entry students. Continuing students increased credit loads through the Saturday option. Both continuing and new students realized benefits from Saturday class times. The article concludes with recommendations for further development of UW-Waukesha's Saturday class program.     

PPBS in higher education planning and management: Part III,perspectives and applications of policy analysis

This is the concluding part of a three-part series on Planning, Program, Budgeting Systems (PPBS) in higher education planning and management. After the experiences of the University of California with PPBS, which we reviewed in Part II, and the subsequent lack of success of PPBS in non-defense applications, we believe a more carefully focused policy analysis approach to be more fruitful. In this paper we describe the nature, foci, and analytical base for policy analysis and present a case study of policy analysis applied to the decision of year-round operations for the University of California. Finally, we give some concluding comments and observations.Parts I and II have previously appeared in Higher Education (1972), vol. 1, nos. 2 and 3.     

Culture difference and science education

The author reviews conceptions of culture and language to provide a conceptual framework for understanding the ways in which cultural differences between students and science teachers can influence learning of that subject. The paper is both theoretical and practical.
