This random assignment impact study of Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based Mentoring involved 1,139 9- to 16-year-old students in 10 cities nationwide. Youth were randomly assigned to either a treatment group (receiving mentoring) or a control group (receiving no mentoring) and were followed for 1.5 school years. At the end of the first school year, relative to the control group, mentored youth performed better academically, had more positive perceptions of their own academic abilities, and were more likely to report having a "special adult" in their lives. However, they did not show improvements in classroom effort, global self-worth, relationships with parents, teachers or peers, or rates of problem behavior. Academic improvements were also not sustained into the second school year.  相似文献

The paper explores the ways girls appropriate gender through actions, gesture and talk to achieve things in primary school science classrooms. It draws on socio-cultural approaches to show that when everyday classroom practices are viewed from multiple planes of analysis, historical, institutional and in the micro dynamics of classroom interaction, gender comes into view in a variety of ways and not only via dominant discourses. Focused observations and interviews were carried out in Year 3 primary school science classrooms in four schools in the UK and the USA (children aged 7 and 8 years). The paper suggests how teachers can work with gender to open up new spaces in primary science classrooms for girls. This remains a priority irrespective of the contemporary anxieties around boys’ achievement if girls are to grow up feeling that science is a legitimate arena in which to participate.  相似文献

Widely shared concerns in the US engineering profession have fostered the evolution of technologies and organizations that today are centred in the National Technological University (NTU). Most engineering graduates enter the workforce with a baccalaureate degree today, as they did in 1900, despite the enormous complexity of modern technology. This paper will consider issues that are important in the teaching and learning of programming to students in their first year of an undergraduate course in a computer science discipline. We will suggest that the current educational climate offers the opportunity to move the focus onto the learner and their experience, and that second language learning and teaching in the field of English as a Second, or Foreign, Language may be a fruitful area on which to draw. We will review a particular aspect of second language pedagogy-learner strategies-and discuss their applicability to students who are starting to learn how to program. Literature on the level of adaptive functioning and relative strengths and weaknesses in functioning of individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) was reviewed. The electronic databases PsycINFO, PubMed, Expanded Academic, Web of Science, Scopus and ProQuest were searched electronically for relevant articles and dissertations using the search terms ‘Williams syndrome’ or ‘Williams-Beuren syndrome’ combined with ‘adaptive function*’, ‘adaptive behavio*’, ‘independ*’ and ‘autonomy’. Selection criteria included English language articles, theses and book chapters, participants with a diagnosis of Williams syndrome and inclusion of a standardised assessment of adaptive functioning. Twenty-two published articles and two PhD. dissertations (one subsequently published as a poster presentation) met the selection criteria for inclusion in the review. Fifteen investigated adaptive functioning in children and adolescents aged up to 19 years of age, five investigated adaptive functioning in adults and four included participants across a wider age range and included both children and adults. Along with identifying methodological issues, the review addressed the following areas: overall level of adaptive functioning in WS, domain strengths and weaknesses, evidence of heterogeneity, relationship to intellectual ability, changes with chronological age, relationship with maladaptive behaviour, gender differences and the potential influence of environmental factors which may be related to adaptive functioning in WS.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe the reported perceptions of six midwife participants at different stages of their engagement in a multiphase process of adopting a new model of prenatal care. Midwives were interviewed at five different stages during the process of implementing CenteringPregnancy, a model of group prenatal care. The research methodology used in this study was phenomenology. The conceptual framework for exploring the participants' perceptions was based on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's patient-centered model and on the International Institute for Restorative Practices' empowerment model. The five themes that emerged from the midwives' experiences mirrored the stages of change health education model. Suggestions for the implementation and sustainability of the CenteringPregnancy model of care are provided based on the five themes that emerged from this study's findings.  相似文献
