NSSE Benchmarks and Institutional Outcomes: A Note on the Importance of Considering the Intended Uses of a Measure in Validity Studies

Surveys play a prominent role in assessment and institutional research, and the NSSE College Student Report is one of the most popular surveys of enrolled undergraduates. Recent studies have raised questions about the validity of the NSSE survey. Although these studies have themselves been criticized, documenting the validity of an instrument requires an affirmative finding regarding the adequacy and appropriateness of score interpretation and use. Using national data from NSSE 2008, the present study found that the NSSE benchmarks provided dependable means for 50 or more students and were significantly related to important institutional outcomes such as retention and graduation rates.     

Launching the Virtual Academic Center: Issues and Challenges in Innovation

In October 2010, the University of Southern California School of Social Work entered the online education environment with the launch of the first national web-based MSW program. After an initial enrollment of 80 students, in just 3 years this state-of-the-art MSW, offered in a technology-advanced synchronous and asynchronous format, has generated an enrollment of 2,000 students residing in 38 states. The development and rapid growth of the Virtual Academic Center has not been without significant challenges, the most substantial of which has been the creation of a national field education program. This paper describes the MSW courses taught in the online environment, and pedagogical hurdles faced in order to maintain the educational quality that is the hallmark of the School's campus-based MSW program.     

Evaluation Dimensions for Full-Time Head Coaches at NCAA Division II Institutions

Respondents (n=34) participated in three rounds of a Delphi study to determine dimensions that should be included in the evaluation of full-time head coaches at NCAA Division II institutions. Delphi panel members included athletic directors, intercollegiate head coaches, and student-athletes at randomly selected NCAA Division II institutions. In total, 175 (92.6 per cent) of the initial 189 unique behaviors reached consensus for inclusion. Only two behaviors (1.1 per cent) reached consensus for exclusion. Twelve behaviors (6.3 per cent) failed to reach consensus. Differences between respondent groups were found in only seven (3.7 per cent) of the 189 behaviors. Only small absolute differences in mean importance ratings of the twenty categories were found. To develop a more practical evaluation tool, the results obtained were refined, lowering the number of categories to fifteen and the number of behaviors to ninety-one. The refined evaluation tool contains the most important dimensions for evaluating head coaches. It represents the essentials of a coaching evaluation.     

How different are students of school psychology and clinical psychology?

Based on many years of training students in both school and clinical psychology, the authors have formulated some impressions of differences and similarities found in these trainees. While generalizations remain tentative and call for research, the students in each of these disciplines seem to present different patterns in cognitive styles, perceptions of clients, conceptions of professional role, and personality characteristics. In personality, the students in these fields often display differences in need for structure, need for external support, social maturity, and desire for autonomous professional functioning. Differences seem to be related to variations in previous work and educational experiences, and to differences in age, sex and marital status. Implications for quality of service offered and training needs are outlined.     

Conceptual impulsivity as a consideration in test interpretation

A discussion of the influences of impulsivity on test performance is presented, along with suggested procedures for ascertaining more accurately the cognitive abilities of impulsive children.
