Adolescents (n=43) previously diagnosed as dyslexic/reading disabled had markedly lower IQ scores on the newly standardized Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) than on the earlier administered WISC-R. The declines for Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs were 10, 12, and 11 points, respectively, which were twice as great as in a subset of the standardization sample given both versions of the WISC. The adolescents did not show a significant decline in standard scores from the Wide Range Achievement Test (Level I to Level II). However, only two subjects had current reading and spelling standard scores above the 25th percentile. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of imagery interventions on the vocabulary acquisition abilities of
second grade students. A total of 15 students were randomly assigned to three different intervention conditions: Word Only,
which involves the simple verbal presentation of a vocabulary word; Dual Coding, in which a picture was paired with the vocabulary
word, and Image Creation, in which students were told to create a mental picture of the vocabulary word in their mind and
draw it on paper. These students were taught a total of 21 vocabulary words: seven animal and habitat words, seven musical
instrument terms, and seven science terms. A Latin square design was used, in which each group of students rotated through
each of the interventions, being exposed to a different treatment condition for each category of words. Participants were
measured on the number of words they were successfully able to acquire through the use of experimenter designed comprehension
measures. While no statistical significance was shown between the interventions across the word categories, a significant
difference was found between the Image Creation and Word Only interventions within the science terms category. Students also
reported that the imagery interventions facilitated the ease with which they learned the words. The findings have implications
for increasing the success of classroom instruction, specifically for presenting novel vocabulary words to early elementary

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which Lebanese Baccalaureate II students' (Freshmen in american colleges) perceptions of their academic abilities match their actual achievements in both school and government examinations. A population sample of 2999 students were selected from a representative school sample (n = 122) throughout Lebanon. Students' demographic data, occupational choices and perceptions of their achievement were collected by a three-part questionnaire. Their cumulative grade averages in school and in government examinations were standardized and used to assess their career maturity. Findings indicated that most students wanted to become engineers or physicians while their actual achievement scores in school was average and in the government examination below average. Most correlational values between perceptions and actual achievement scores were either negative or insignificant. Students were found to make immature career decisions mainly because of the lack of any formal guidance programs in schools. 相似文献
