Bibliographic control of medical illustrations--a case study in the development of a library subsystem: I. Project planning

The need to provide bibliographic access to a collection of original medical illustrations led the Library of the University of California, San Francisco, to search for a bibliographic control system and, not finding a satisfactory one, to develop one of its own, Part 1 of the report details the planning for such a development, including the need for bibliographic control of illustrations, the goals of the proposed system, design decisions and changes required, the type of system chosen, special subjects indexing needs, the required output, and staffing and budgetary needs.     

HIDDEN OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PREDICTION OF COLLEGE GRADES FOR DIFFERENT SUBGROUPS

The purpose of this paper was to examine the problems and opportunities of academic prediction for different ethnic groups. Several recent studies of academic prediction for blacks and whites were reviewed in regard to: 1) the situation in which the data were obtained; 2) the prediction technique employed, and 3) the data distribution likely to give rise to the obtained prediction indices. It was suggested that a total-group regression equation which "benefits" a minority group by overpredicting mean grade may actually be very disadvantageous if accompanied by a large error of estimate. The damage can be produced by precluding selection of the most qualified minority group members and thus lowering the groups' performance. Differential process theory was proposed as a potential source of explanations for differential prediction. It was proposed that alternative strategic approaches to scholastic tasks might alter the covariance of predictor tests with grades. Finally, it was suggested that, under certain circumstances, the patterns of standardized regression weights in the prediction of grades, might suggest group difference in problem-solving strategies.     

Problems in interagency collaboration: Lessons from a project that failed

Several institutions (e.g., child welfare, police, court, health, education, social service) are necessarily involved in the management of child abuse in all communities. The need for better cooperation among them has been acknowledged; inquests into child deaths resulting from abuse have often attributed some blame to faulty communication and/or poor cooperation between the institutions. The Community Child Abuse Team (CCAT) Project was designed by these same institutions in Hamilton, Ontario, to maximize interagency collaboration. The hypothesis, that this "interagency collaboration" model would provide more efficient and effective services to abused children and their families, was never tested. During its 30 months of operation the CCAT program never materialized as planned and funding was terminated. This paper describes selected problems and issues that arose during the struggle to implement the project. The central problematic issue was control. Those responsible for the project lacked the power to insist that the design be adhered to during the initial stage.
