A clinical study of the efficacy of topical corticosteroids on dry eye

Objective： To evaluate the effect of topical corticosteroid for treatment of moderate or severe dry eye. Methods： Sixty eyes of 30 patients with moderate or severe dry eye, who were not sensitive to artificial tears, were treated with 0.1% fluorometholone eye drops. Subjective symptom and objective tests were used to evaluate the efficacy of treatment before and after application of 0.1% fluorometholone eye drops for 1 week and 1 month. Side effects were also evaluated. Results： After 1 week of treatment, subjective symptoms were improved in all dry eye patients; objective tests were improved in all dry eye patients 1 month after treatment, and the difference was significant. Conclusion： Topical corticosteroid drops can rapidly and effectively relieve the symptoms and signs of moderate or severe dry eye.     

Melody of ＂Jasmine Flower＂ Echoes in Olympic Venues

When hostesses dressed in outfits with image of white-and-blue porcelain and holding red flower bouquets served medals at Olympic medal ceremonies during the 2008 Games, the readapted, lingering melody of the Chinese folk song ＂Jasmine Flower＂ sounded in the sports venues. According to Wang Ning, an official in charge of medal ceremonies from the Beijing Olympic Games Organizing Committee, the music used at the medal ceremony was recreated based on the original melody of ＂Jasmine Flower＂ which is perhaps the most popular Chinese folk song.     

Study of large medical equipment allocation in Xuzhou

Objective： To investigate the allocation and management of large medical equipment （LME） in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, in order to make the best use of LME to meet the medical needs of local people. Methods： The research collected data from all hospitals that have LME in Xuzhou using questionnaire; 38 （97.4%） hospitals returned the questionnaire. Results： In Xuzhou, there are a total of 71 pieces of LME, each serving 126 600 people in an area of 163 km^2. Sixty-two percent of them are allocated in urban areas, with Gini coefficient at 0.52, indicating imbalance and biased allocation of LME. Conclusion： The allocation of LME in Xuzhou is out of control and unfairly allocated.     

Effects of chromium nanoparticle dosage on growth,body composition,serum hormones and tissue chromium in Sprague-Dawley rats

This 6-week study was conducted to evaluate the effects of seven different levels of dietary chromium (Cr) (0, 75, 150,300, 450, 600, and 1200 ppb Cr) in the form of Cr nanoparticle (CrNano) on growth, body composition, serum hormones and tissue Cr in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Seventy male SD rats (average initial body weight of (83.2±4.4) g) were randomly assigned to seven dietary treatments (n=10). At the end of the trial, body composition was assessed via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). All rats were then sacrificed to collect samples of blood, organs and tissues for determination of serum hormones and tissue Cr contents. The results indicated that lean body mass was significantly increased (P＜0.05) due to the addition of 300 and 450 ppb Cr from CrNano. Supplementation of 150, 300, 450, and 600 ppb Cr decreased (P＜0.05) percent body fat significantly. Average daily gain was increased (P＜0.05) by addition of 75, 150, and 300 ppb Cr and feed efficiency was increased (P＜0.05) by supplementation of 75, 300, and 450 ppb Cr. Addition of 300 and 450 ppb Cr decreased (P＜0.05) the insulin level in serum greatly. Cr contents in liver and kidney were greatly increased (P＜0.05) by the addition of Cr as CrNano in the dosage of from 150 ppb to 1200 ppb. In addition, Supplementation of 300, 450, and 600 ppb Cr significantly increased (P＜0.05) Cr content in the hind leg muscle. These results suggest that supplemental CrNano has beneficial effects on growth performance and body composition, and increases tissue Cr concentration in selected muscles.

MGB probe assay for rapid detection of mtDNA11778 mutation in the Chinese LHON patients by real-time PCR

Objective:Leber's hereditary optic neuropathY (LHON)is a maternally inherited degeneration of the optic nerve caused by point mutations of mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA).Many unsolved questions regarding the penetrance and pathophysiological mechanism of LHON demand efficient and reliable mutation testing.This study aims to develop a minor groove binder(MGB) probe assay for rapid detection of mtDNA11778 mutation and heteroplasmy in Chinese LHON patients by real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR).Methods:Forty-eight patients suspected of having LHON and their maternal relatives underwent a molecular genetic evaluation,with 20 normal individuals as a control group at the same time.A real-time PCR involving two MGB probes was used to detect the mtDNA 11778 mutation and heteroplasmy.A linear standard curve was obtained by pUCmLHONG and pUCmLHONA clones.Results:All 48 LHON patients and their matemal relatives were positive for mtDNA 11778 mutation in our assay,27 heteroplasmic and 21 homoplasmic.Eighteen cases did not show an occurrence of the disease,while 9 developed the disease among the 27 heteroplasmic mutation cases.Eleven did not show an occurrence of the disease,while 10 cases developed the disease among 21 homoplasmic mutation cases.There was a significant difierence in the incidence between the heteroplasmic and the homoplasmic mutation types.The time needed for running a real-time PCR assay was only 80 min.Conclusion:This real-time PCR assay is a rapid,reliable method for mtDNA mutation detection as well as heteroplasmy quantification.Detecting this ratio is very important for predicting phenotypic expression of unaffected carriers.
