E‐journals,researchers — and the new librarians

This paper provides the results of a two‐year investigation into the use of e‐journals by the UK research community. Log analysis, questionnaires, interviews, and observation were used to collect the information. The results are presented in a FAQ format to make the key findings accessible. The main findings are that journals have become central to most disciplines, and that the e‐form has become the prime means of access. The results for history suggest that the old scholarly communication mantras (scientists primarily communicate through articles, historians through monographs) are rapidly breaking down. Indeed, all researchers seem addicted to journal content. Research without this resource now seems unthinkable; journals are a researcher's lifeblood. Gateway services, hugely popular in science, are re‐intermediating the broken chain between publisher and reader; they are the new librarians.     

Vocationalism and Liberal Education: exploring the tensions

Vocationalism is distinguished from vocational education and distinctions are drawn between the various senses in which vocationalism or the pursuit of vocational ‘relevance’ can be understood. The burden of the argument of the essay is that vocationalism, understood as teaching skills in virtue of their putative vocational usefulness or relevance, is misguided both on prudential and educational grounds. A basis for some reconciliation between liberal and vocational learning is found in the fact that learning for its own sake and learning for vocational purposes need not be conceived as mutually exclusive activities.     

Simulated tennis matchplay in a controlled environment

The aim of this study was to develop an exercise protocol to simulate tennis matchplay on a 'category 2' surface. Match analyses were used to form the basis for the design of the protocol. The protocol involved playing against a tennis ball serving machine. Part A of the protocol comprised 92 min 46 s of simulated tennis matchplay; Part B consisted of continuous hitting to the point of 'volitional fatigue' or when the required hitting frequency for two consecutive ball feeds could no longer be maintained. Ten elite tennis players (5 males, 5 females) volunteered to participate in the study, which was performed on an indoor tennis court (Matchplay?, En-Tout-Cas)?. Their age, body mass and estimated maximal oxygen uptake were as follows: males, 21.7±1.0 years, 73.6±2.6 kg and 58.0±1.7 ml?·?kg^?1?·?min^?1, respectively; females, 21.9±1.3 years, 62.3±2.0 kg and 42.2±0.7 ml?·?kg?·?min^?1, respectively (mean±). Heart rate, change in body mass and time to volitional fatigue were monitored. The heart rate responses of the participants to the simulated matchplay (range: 140-157 beats?·?min^?1, 73-81% peak heart rate) were consistent with the results of previous studies, for 'actual' matchplay. This protocol was successful in simulating similar physiological responses in Part A to 'actual' matchplay on a 'category 2' surface, in a controlled environment; it was also a sensitive evaluation tool of skilled performance in Part B. The current protocol may be used as a baseline protocol for studying the influence of, for example, training and dietary intervention on performance.     

Improving the lives of students,gay and straight alike: Gay‐straight alliances and the role of school psychologists

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students face many risk factors every day when they enter their school's door. These students often fear for their safety at school, are victimized, have academic difficulties, suffer from issues with their identity development, and are at risk for suicide. School‐based Gay‐Straight Alliances (GSAs) have been shown to reduce the risk for LGBT students in these areas. School psychologists are in a unique position to be instrumental in alleviating many of the problems LGBT students face every day by being a GSA advisor. This article reviews the literature on LGBT student risk in terms of the benefits of a GSA and guides school psychologists on how to start and advise a GSA in their schools.     

Relationships Between Dimensions of Supervisors' Influence and Counselor Trainees' Performance

Practicum supervisors' expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness were related to supervision outcome measures. Trustworthiness proved to have the strongest associations.     

The students-recruiting-students undergraduate engineering recruiting programme

The students-recruiting-students (SRS) programme is an outreach programme developed to recruit high school students into the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas. The four phases of this programme from development to on-campus, off-campus and post-admission recruiting are detailed in this paper along with 7 years of programmatic results. The goals of this paper are to introduce the SRS concept, encourage successful development of similar recruiting programmes and increase freshman enrolment in engineering. The SRS programme has more than doubled the department's freshman enrolment over the last 8 years.
