This article uses data obtained from a 2-year study—observation, survey, written- and verbal-artifact analysis, and interviews—of an interdisciplinary organization of pain management professionals to illustrate the analytic advantages of Mol and Latour's multiple-ontologies theories over incommensurability theory in understanding interdisciplinary practice. We demonstrate that pain science and medicine encompass a variety of practices that transcend disciplinary boundaries in ways not accounted for with incommensurability theory. After explicating multiple ontology theory and illustrating its analytic potential, we conclude by recommending a postplural model for inquiry into rhetoric of science.  相似文献

One of the greatest challenges we face in kinesiology is changing behavior—specifically, converting habitually sedentary individuals into active human beings. This task is not an easy one. Thus, when we adopt Easy Street strategies that focus on introducing, informing, and entertaining, we have very little hope of effecting such conversions. Easy Street thinking, I claim, rests on a neglect of our biological roots as embodied creatures who grow both muscles and new lifestyles slowly in the face of some kind of persistent test.  相似文献

Higher education's efforts to respond to the growing demand for non-traditional programs and services have resulted in the proliferation of external degree programs. The present inquiry examines the status of these programs in traditional institutions. Basing evaluation on the guidelines set forth by the Carnegie Commission for Non-Traditional Study (1973), the author suggests that external programs have not achieved the desired degrees of integration into the academic mainstream. Diverse management and planning approaches that might facilitate institutional adaptation and enhance program strength and viability are explored.  相似文献

The expected decline in the number of high school graduates in the United States through the rest of this decade will almost certainly lead to closure of some higher education institutions. An important part of the analysis of the expected effects of institutional closure is estimation of redistribution of students attending the closed school. This paper shows how coefficient estimates from models of enrollment demand can be used to predict the alternative attendance choices of students enrolled at the closed school. The results indicate that predictions differ depending on the estimation method used and that the predictions using some methods are sensitive to subjective assumptions.  相似文献

By understanding the normal humeral and scapular kinematics during the kayak stroke, inferences about the relationship of kayaking technique and shoulder injury may be established. The purpose of this study was to describe scapular and humeral kinematics and to compare dominant versus nondominant symmetry in healthy whitewater kayakers performing the forward stroke. Twenty-five competent whitewater kayakers (mean age: 34.1 +/- 9.4 years, mean height: 1.768 +/- 0.093m, mean mass: 78.2 +/- 13.0 kg) underwent humeral and scapular kinematic assessment, using an electromagnetic tracking device, while kayaking on a kayak ergometer. Paired t-tests were used to determine symmetry. Scapular and humeral kinematic means and standard deviations at six time points during the kayak stroke were described. Scapular and humeral kinematics were shown to be similar upon bilateral comparison. The greatest potential for injury during the forward stroke may be at thrust paddle shaft vertical when the humerus is maximally elevated in internal rotation and adduction as subacromial structures may be mechanically impinged. The relationship between scapulohumeral kinematics related to injury at other time points are also described.  相似文献
