’Technical Culture’ and Technical Education in France: a consideration of the work of Claude Grignon and its relevance to British further education curricula

This paper examines Claude Grignon's empirical study of lower levels of vocational education in France. The concepts of technical culture and the morality of technical processes are explored. Grignon argues that the hidden curriculum of the Lycee for vocational education (Lycee d'Enseignement Professionel) socialises students into a worldview in which social relations are conflated with technical relations, and take on the appearance of the certainly of technical processes. Social control is exerted by excluding the possibility of ambiguity and change from this deterministic frame of reference. In the second part of the paper we seek to show that some of Grignon's analytic concepts may offer useful perspectives for analysing British Further Education curricula, by applying the concepts of technical and ‘technicised’ culture to some recent developments in British Further Education curricula.

Stakeholder analysis is key to client-supplier relationships of global outsourcing project success

Outsourcing as a logical consequence of globalization has caused a shift towards the integration of labour forces where communications play a significant role in the success of outsourcing partnerships. Utilizing the lens of an outsourced telecommunications case study we examine how a problematic client-supplier relationship across global loci was transformed by implementing a stakeholder analysis. We discuss how ineffectual project communications caused confusion, disinterest and apathy of client stakeholders challenging the outsourcing partnership. Our insight evidences not only the necessity to transparently address cultural challenges but emphasizes a crucial need to explicitly validate the different audiences. From the increased clarity and purpose provided it proved possible to instigate solutions such that real benefits to the project were realised. We suggest a number of key learning points as ‘lessons learnt’ to enlighten current and future practice of outsourcing relationships across global projects.     

The voice of the cultural restorationists: recent trends in RE policy-making

This article considers the nature of RE curriculum policy-making from 1988–97. It concentrates on the hegemonic intent of cultural restorationists. Cultural restorationism finds expression when current political action is justified by particular interpretations being placed upon the past. This involves particular use of language and a strong emphasis on tradition, culture and the past. It is also related to economics, policy-making generally and, for this article, is particularly related to RE curriculum policy-making. The ‘voice’ of the cultural restorationists is explored and the manner in which they proceeded to impact on RE policy-making. The context of text production is explored, with its public ridicule and derision, also the marginalization of key figures and groups with skilful manipulation being made of the media. Language itself was adapted and used as a tool to achieve a manipulative and ‘ratchet-like’ effect on education. Many official documents are used positively to effect their agenda, reflecting hegemonic intent. In religious education policy-making cultural restorationism is aligned closely to a ‘Christianizing’ agenda. This involves the increased use of centralizing powers and the subsequent redefinition of the role for those involved at a local level in RE. Interview data are used from parliamentarians and those seeking to influence the processes. The article concludes that RE is increasingly subject to central control, despite its unique status vis à vis the National Curriculum.     

Mathematics anxiety in young children: Concurrent and longitudinal associations with mathematical performance

This study explored mathematics anxiety in a longitudinal sample of 113 children followed from second to third grade. We examined how mathematics anxiety related to different types of mathematical performance concurrently and longitudinally and whether the relations between mathematics anxiety and mathematical performance differed as a function of working memory. Concurrent analyses indicated that mathematics anxiety represents a unique source of individual differences in children’s calculation skills and mathematical applications, but not in children’s geometric reasoning. Furthermore, we found that higher levels of mathematics anxiety in second grade predicted lower gains in children’s mathematical applications between second and third grade, but only for children with higher levels of working memory. Overall, our results indicate that mathematics anxiety is an important construct to consider when examining sources of individual differences in young children’s mathematical performance. Furthermore, our findings suggest that mathematics anxiety may affect how some children use working memory resources to learn mathematical applications.
