儒家价值观的现代意义

与西文基督教伦理根源于对“上帝”的绝对信仰不同,儒家价值观的根基在于与天道合一的人之“仁心本性”,而由此开出的仁、义、礼、智、诚(信)儒家“五常”,是为儒家伦理美德的恒常原则,最终又落实到具体应用的礼制规范层面.从“心性”基础层和“五常”中间层来看,儒家伦理具有普世伦理的意义;而从最外表的礼制规范层面来说,儒家伦理须因时制宜,因革损益,以适应时代与社会的变迁与需求.儒家价值观,对解决伴随科技与知识突飞猛进而日益凸显的价值失落、道德失范问题势必有所帮助,对现代人们的人伦日用仍不失指导意义.     

Riding over socialism and global capitalism: changing education governance and social policy paradigms in post‐Mao China

In coping with the challenges of globalization, various reform measures, in the field of social policy, have been initiated in post‐Mao China. Strategies such as privatization, marketization, commodification and societalization have been adopted to redefine the relationship between the state, the market and other non‐state sectors involved in social policy provision and financing. In particular, the restructuring of state‐owned enterprises and the de‐monopolization of the state in social policy provision has inevitably led to significant changes in the post‐Mao welfare regime. This article has chosen a theme ‘riding over socialism and global capitalism’ to examine how the Chinese government reinvents its social policy delivery by adopting new governance strategies to cope with the growing impacts of globalization. With particular reference to higher education, this article focuses on how the three major aspects of higher education governance, namely, provision, financing and regulation, have changed since the economic reform started in the late 1970s. This article concludes by asking whether the introduction of new governance strategies and new reform strategies in education have weakened the state capacity.     

A Peer Counselling Service in a Secondary School to Combat Bullying: Issues in Planning and Ongoing Management

Peer counselling schemes have been developed in some secondary schools to combat bullying. Research supports the need for bullied victims to speak with their peers. Such schemes need regular monitoring and modification to suit the school's particular pastoral needs. This paper explores the management issues surrounding the provision of peer counselling in one service, managed by a school counsellor. The service is outlined to show that appointment setting requires careful planning and ongoing management. This paper discusses four central issues, which are the role of a peer counselling service; the selected model; the most suitable room location; and the most appropriate time for counselling to take place in secondary school.     

Race Relations and the Making of Educational Policy: The view from the centre in the 1960s

Conservative and Labour Governments in the 1960s sought through education policy to promote harmonious race relations. Drawing on recently recent archive material the article seeks to explore what this meant in practice. In particular it pays close attention to the publication of Circular 7/65 and its repercussions. The article further examines the role assigned to public education to promote better community relations, particularly after 1965. It concludes by arguing that the discourse of that period has continued to exert a powerful influence until the present day.     

Helping Clients Cope with Change in the 21st Century: A Balancing Act

The national vision to equip all individuals with the knowledge, skills and desire for lifelong learning in order to meet the challenges in the world of work today, and in the future, is a powerful incentive for career services professionals. The authors use the analogy of a chair to discuss four strategies to assist clients in maintaining balance as they cope with uncertainty and change.     

English Language Teaching in East Asia Today: An Overview

The paper is structured in three parts. Part 1 discusses the position and status of English in 15 countries or education systems in East Asia, with the term East Asia used to cover Southeast and Northeast Asia. Part 2 of the paper is devoted to recent developments in English Language Teaching (ELT) in the 15 countries or education systems, while Part 3 attempts some generalizations on the teaching of English in East Asia with regard to issues and problems. One of these issues is concerned with the suitability of certain imported teaching techniques in settings where English is seldom used outside the classroom. Some of the problems are conceptualized as dilemmas.
