Counselor Education: If It Isn't Fresh,We're Out of Business

Counselor education programs will be under increasing pressure from several sources in the next decade. Psychology licensing laws, the requirements of third party vendors and a changing job market will cause restructuring or elimination of current programs at many universities. Flight, fight, accommodation, and professionalization are considered as ways of coping with this threat. The authors offer recommendations for survival.     

Critical Incidents in Counseling: Simulated Video Experiences for Training Counselors

This article explains the rationale, development, and use of a simulation approach to training counselors in which videotaped vignettes of critical incidents that occur in the course of establishing and maintaining a helping relationship are presented to trainees as stimuli. Through the use of this approach, trainees can learn to identify and understand client communications, their own reactions and communications, and the bilateral nature of the counseling relationship.     

Perceptions of Counselor Performance: A Comparative Study

Videotaped excerpts of actual counseling interviews were rated using the criteria of empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence, depth of self-exploration, and counselor effectiveness. Analysis-of-variance techniques indicated no significant differences among the ratings of counselors, counselor educators, and graduate students; there were significant differences among ratings of graduate students in different programs.     

Internationalisation, Diversity and the Humanities Curriculum: Cosmopolitanism and Multiculturalism Revisited

This article stages a dialogue between cosmopolitanism and multiculturalism in order to think through what is at stake in demands that universities should produce graduates who are sensitive to social diversity and attuned to the contemporary realities of globalisation. The argument is that, although 'graduate attributes' are no doubt an effective management tool in a massified higher education system, they can also be used to focus attention on what dispositions it is reasonable and desirable to expect graduates to develop. The arguments about cosmopolitanism of Jeremy Waldron and Martha Nussbaum are considered.     

Changes in Counseling Response Preference among Rehabilitation Counseling Interns

Counseling response preferences of graduate students completing internship requirements were assessed using Patterson's Rehabilitation Counseling Response Exercise during the first and final weeks of their internships at a comprehensive, multidisciplinary vocational rehabilitation center. It was hypothesized that at the end of the internship the students would show a significant increase in preference for active counseling responses and a correspondingly significant decrease in preferences for passive techniques. Five counseling responses were evaluated and change did occur as hypothesized.
