Self-Efficacy Beliefs,Classroom Management,and the Cradle-to-Prison Pipeline

In this article, we focus on connections between and among teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs, classroom management practices, and the cradle to prison pipeline. Drawing from Bandura’s (1986) theorization of self-efficacy, we discuss how teachers’ beliefs shape their classroom management practices and how these beliefs and practices can be essential sites to understanding and decreasing disparate outcomes in disciplinary referral patterns among practicing teachers. We emphasize the importance of building teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs and sense of efficacy to inform their classroom management practices/decisions. In particular, we focus on three sites of learning that, we argue, are essential to building teachers’ sense of efficacy in the classroom: learning about and building powerful and sustainable relationships with students; learning about and developing an understanding of outside of school contexts that students experience; and recognizing and appropriately responding to traumatic experiences of students.     

Incorporating Personality Assessment Into Counseling to Help College Students Adopt and Maintain Exercise Behaviors

The authors investigated the influence of several personality traits on exercise adherence and exercise self‐efficacy for 168 undergraduate students. At all levels of exercise adherence, students with different personality traits had different amounts of exercise self‐efficacy. Implications for college counselors working with students to improve exercise adherence are considered.     

Quiet Please! There's a Lady on the Stage--Boys,Gender and Sexuality Non-conformity and Class

In this paper we do two things. Initially, we explore the experience of gender and sexuality non-conformity for boys in school. Here, the designation sissy boy is interpreted through shame dynamics produced in part by the linguistic violence of designation. From this we consider the development of what we call epistemophilic resolutions--the falling in love with knowing that realigns the sissy boy within the school's discursive terrain. As a tentative and unstable resolution to gender and sexuality non-conformity, the epistemophilic resolution operates as a masquerade (after <citeref rid="b14">Riviere, 1986</citeref>). Interpreting this resolution as masquerade allows us, in the second section of this paper, to speculate about the political potential inherent in the anxiety that underpins the operation of epistemophilia as a resolution to the shame of sexuality and gender non-conformity. This offers, in our interpretation, a resistance to (fore) closure and thus a disruption to discursive reproduction.     

Journals of post secondary outdoor recreation students: The results of a content analysis

The purpose of this study was to examine if and how participation in a journaling workshop influenced the content of student journals. A total of 59 post secondary students from two university programs in North America participated in this study and were randomly assigned to either an experimental (n=21) or control (n=38) group. Before their field course, participants in the experimental group took part in a 45-minute workshop that provided them with strategies for effective journaling. After the field course, a content analysis was performed on each student journal (a total of 880 distinct entries) to investigate if the journals of students in the experimental group incorporated materials delivered in the workshop. A modest number of differences were found between the journal entries of students who did and did not participate in the workshop.     

SEN Conciliation: Is there a pattern to referrals?

There has been growing interest in conciliation and mediation as a method of resolving disputes in Special Educational Needs in the UK. The Queen's Speech (1999) promised a new Special Educational Bill. This, among other things, would require local education authorities (LEAs) to establish conciliation arrangements for resolving disputes with parents. While there have been some studies of models of conciliation practice, and indeed many are currently under development and construction, there has been little published on patterns of referrals for conciliation. This paper explores such patterns in one LEA.     

Teacher-perceived principal leadership styles,decision-making styles and job satisfaction: how congruent are data from Indonesia with the Anglophile and Western literature?

School leadership is seen as important for both schools and for government and private policy-makers. The relationships between teacher-perceived principal leadership styles, teacher-perceived principal decision-making styles and teacher-perceived job satisfaction in schools in Lampung Province, Indonesia were examined. Data were collected by questionnaires from 475 teachers. This paper uses Indonesian data, but the relationships studied will be of wider interest to school stakeholders in Indonesia and to a wider global readership. Considerable effort was placed on the collection of robust data to address existing gaps in the literature about these relationships. The career plans of women

The impact of environmental forces and the interaction of occupational and family roles on career plans were explored in interviews with female vocational clients. Twenty unemployed women in career transitions were interviewed over a three-year period. The women were asked about their career plans at age 18, for the immediate, and the long-range future; the life events that happened and the effects these events have had on career directions. In addition, the women were asked whether they feel they are stuck or moving in their current job situation. Themes from the interviews affirm that role priorities for family and work have been shaped by socialization and changing opportunities. Many of the women, who felt unprepared previously to integrate occupational behavior in their lives, now report that the need for adaptability to work roles has become a priority.This research was partially supported by an award to the first author by the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission.     

Dealing with diversity in higher education: awareness-raising and a linguistic perspective on teachers’ intercultural competence

Higher education institutions around the world are educating an increasingly diverse student population. While this responds to government discourse around widening participation and the need to internationalise, and while it can make for a stimulating teaching-learning environment, it can also present teachers with certain challenges that demand greater intercultural competence. This article considers how, as part of their intercultural repertoire, teachers – and by extension, students – can benefit from developing an understanding of language, and, in particular, the general principles governing how we mean in language and the lingua-cultural variability that impacts upon the process of doing so. It proposes awareness-raising activities as a way of promoting such understanding.     

Text Learning Using Scientific Diagrams: Implications for Classroom Use

In two experiments, eighth-graders viewed ecologically valid diagrams and then read a text containing multiple feature-to-fact associations or studied the same materials in reverse order. Using the Kulhavy and Stock model of text learning using organized spatial displays, it was predicted that those students viewing the diagram prior to reading the text would recall more facts and features than subjects viewing the material in the reverse order. These predictions were well supported. In addition, since the materials used in the experiments were created from actual classroom materials, these experiments examined whether the model for text learning is also valid using this type of materials. In this area the model proved to be very effective as well.
