This paper features one gay parent activist in the complex social milieu of his child’s school and his community, his actions meeting both resistance and concurrence as a larger movement operated locally and nationally to make schooling more accepting of and acceptable to gays and lesbians. The paper traces this man’s parenting processes and their effect on the schooling of many children, not only his own, and then contrasts his voice with the reluctant, often denying, and finally acquiescent voices of school people. The narrative captures the essence of cultural and identity change as well as individual and institutional processes. Turning to theory, I use postmodern dilemmas to define the episodic movements of the groups and the multipositionality of the individuals involved. Teachers, in Canada and elsewhere, live and work on school landscapes being shifted by globalization, immigration, demographics, economic disparities and environmental changes. Within those landscapes teachers find themselves struggling to compose lives that allow them to live with respect and dignity in relation with children, youth and families. In places in Canada, increasing numbers of teachers are leaving after only a few years of teaching. In this paper we take up questions about the stories teachers tell of their leaving and about what we can learn about our work as teacher educators from listening to, and inquiring into, their stories. Considering the inter-relatedness of our lives as teacher educators with teachers, we also inquire into our shifting landscapes as teacher educators. We discuss possible spaces we might collaboratively shape with teachers as they, and we, attempt to sustain our stories to live by on these shifting landscapes. 相似文献

We examined text memory in children with word reading deficits to determine how these difficulties impact representations
of text meaning. We show that even though children with poor word decoding recall more central than peripheral information,
they show a significantly bigger deficit relative to controls on central than on peripheral information. We call this the
centrality deficit and argue that it is the consequence of insufficient cognitive resources for connecting ideas together due to these children’s
resources being diverted from comprehension to word decoding. We investigated a possible compensatory mechanism for making
these connections. Because a text representation is a synthesis of text information and a reader’s prior knowledge, we hypothesized
that having knowledge of the passage topic might reduce or eliminate the centrality deficit. Our results support this knowledge
compensation hypothesis: The centrality deficit was evident when poor readers did not have prior knowledge, but was eliminated
when they did. This presents an exciting avenue to pursue for possible remediation of reading comprehension in children with

This study examined children''s drawings to explain children''s conceptual understanding of plant structure and function. The study explored whether the children''s drawings accurately reflect their conceptual understanding about plants in a manner that can be interpreted by others. Drawing, survey, interview, and observational data were collected from 182 students in grades K and 1 in rural southeastern United States. Results demonstrated the children held a wide range of conceptions concerning plant structure and function. These young children held very simple ideas about plants with respect to both their structure and function. Consistent with the drawings, the interviews presented similar findings. 相似文献
