This paper shows how, in the interest of emphasizing the systems concept, rotating machines have been integrated into a systems laboratory. Small machines provide the mechanical flexibility necessary in the emphasis of the systems concept, yet essential machine characteristics are retained. The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California's newly revised Year I-II curriculum integrates information literacy components based on the AAMC's medical informatics objectives throughout the two-year continuum. Students are required to participate in various components taught by librarians from the Norris Medical Library including (1) an information skills workshop, (2) a yearlong literature search project, and (3) an evidence-based medicine resources workshop. Critical appraisal of literature also is included in the curriculum to ensure that the students are familiar with the various research study designs. Librarians also provide resources to assist students in researching learning issues related to cases presented in the curriculum. One focus of gender equity policies in universities has been the creation of ‘retention’ part-time work for professional staff, which allows employees to move between full-time and part-time hours at their request. This paper examines whether such ‘good’ part-time jobs can contribute to or at least not impede women’s career advancement. The paper examines the correlation between job classification and part-time work, and whether a period of part-time work acts as a significant ‘brake’ on a woman’s career trajectory. This study uses data from the 2011 Work and Careers in Australian Universities survey. Part-time work is used extensively by lower-classified women, but rarely by those in higher classifications. Part-time work stalls career advancement compared to working full-time, but this brake is reduced if a woman transitions back to full-time work. 相似文献

Abstract There has been a substantial and potentially significant shift in the UK approach to quality in higher education in the last few years. In England, Wales and Scotland there has been a growing interest in quality enhancement to supplement existing frameworks for quality assurance. In the words of the Chief Executive of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA)1 Peter Williams, “We are now developing a more active strategy for our contribution to quality enhancement” [Williams (http://www.qaa.ac.ure/)]. In this paper, we consider the growing interest in, and attention to, ’quality enhancement’ in higher education at a national level in the UK. We trace the rise to prominence of the concept itself and briefly examine the landscape of agencies that have been funded to engage in quality enhancement activity. We then examine the trend towards greater collaboration between these agencies at a national level that led to the formal proposal to bring many of them together into a new national body, which is known as ‘The Higher Education Academy (Academy)’. We exemplify this collaborative trend by describing how, in the run up to establishing the Academy, the working relationship between two of these agencies the Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) and the Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund (TQEF) National Co‐ordination Team (NCT) was facilitated. In the final part of this paper, we engage in a more speculative consideration of the nature of collaboration at a national policy level and relate this to the literature on change management. To explore the decline in online sexual solicitations between 2000 and 2010 by examining the characteristics of solicitations to better inform prevention efforts. Data are from the Youth Internet Safety Surveys (YISS); three cross-sectional, nationally representative telephone surveys of 3561 youth Internet users in the United States, ages 10 through 17 (1501 in YISS-1; 1500 in YISS-2; 1560 in YISS-3). Unwanted online sexual solicitation was defined as requests to engage in sexual activities or sexual talk or give personal sexual information that were unwanted or, whether wanted or not, made by an adult. The decline in unwanted sexual solicitations from 19% in 2000 to 13% in 2005 to 9% in 2010 was driven by a reduction in youth who were being asked to talk about sex or for personal sexual information online. Pre-teens (ages 10–12) accounted for the majority of this decline. Multiple solicitations over the course of a year also decreased. More solicitations occurred at the hands of people youth knew in person prior to the incident – mainly friends and acquaintances, and less so at the hands of people youth met online. By 2010 most solicitations were occurring through social networking sites. Victims were disclosing solicitation incidents at greater rates in 2010 – mostly to friends. In spite of continuing anxiety about the impact of the Internet on the safety of youth, encouraging trends suggest experiences, behavior and education are moving in the direction of greater online safety and improved experiences for youth. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify factors that may protect or insulate people from engaging in nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI). College students (N = 14,385) from 8 universities participated in a web‐based survey. Results of bivariate correlations and multiple regression revealed that spirituality/religiosity, life satisfaction, and life meaning were predictive of NSSI. The authors provide practice suggestions for college counselors and other professionals charged with helping those at risk for NSSI. 相似文献
