Partnership Experiences for Students

This article outlines a model of Partnership in Primary BA(Ed) initial teacher training and focuses on the different voices that are being used to shape the partnership as it develops.

The article raises some of the issues highlighted in the DES Circular 14/93 and OFSTED reports and considers how school, college and student perspectives can be used to address them.     

Are Integrated Learning Systems Good For Teachers Too?

ABSTRACT

The formal evaluation of Integrated Learning Systems (ILSs) in United Kingdom schools has raised questions about the professional development of teachers as they worked with pupils using the system. In this paper we will present evidence to show that by encouraging the use of information technology for more effective management of learning, and through the use of diagnostic material provided by the system about students, the use of ILSs can encourage the professional development of individual teachers.     

Sex differences in spatial abilities of medical graduates entering residency programs

Sex differences favoring males in spatial abilities have been known by cognitive psychologists for more than half a century. Spatial abilities have been related to three‐dimensional anatomy knowledge and the performance in technical skills. The issue of sex differences in spatial abilities has not been addressed formally in the medical field. The objective of this study was to test an a priori hypothesis of sex differences in spatial abilities in a group of medical graduates entering their residency programs over a five‐year period. A cohort of 214 medical graduates entering their specialist residency training programs was enrolled in a prospective study. Spatial abilities were measured with a redrawn Vandenberg and Kuse Mental Rotations Tests in two (MRTA) and three (MRTC) dimensions. Sex differences favoring males were identified in 131 (61.2%) female and 83 (38.8%) male medical graduates with the median (Q1, Q3) MRTA score [12 (8, 14) vs. 15 (12, 18), respectively; P < 0.0001] and MRTC score [7 (5, 9) vs. 9 (7, 12), respectively; P < 0.0001]. Sex differences in spatial abilities favoring males were demonstrated in the field of medical education, in a group of medical graduates entering their residency programs in a five‐year experiment. Caution should be exerted in applying our group finding to individuals because a particular female may have higher spatial abilities and a particular male may have lower spatial abilities. Appy Hour: Health Sciences Professionals Learn About Apps

ABSTRACT

Appy Hour is a recurring event hosted by an academic health sciences library featuring apps that are informally presented and demonstrated by invited speakers. The audience is encouraged to ask questions during the presentation of the featured app(s). This event provides learning and networking opportunities for health sciences faculty, staff, students, and health care professionals. This article illustrates the process for hosting the event, shares lessons learned, and discusses possible future directions to gain a wider audience.     

ERM on a Shoestring—Workshop Summary Report

Commercial electronic resource management systems are complex and expensive. Alternative solutions to e-resource management were discussed by Dalene Hawthorne and Jennifer Watson in their presentation entitled “ERM on a Shoestring,” at the Seventh Annual E-resource Workshop held at Mississippi State University on July 20, 2007. University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) uses a combination of Blackboard, Filemaker and MySQL databases to keep track of their licenses and invoices for electronic resources. Emporia State University (ESU) uses their ILS to manage license agreements. The presentation covers the benefits of each option and practical information for setting up an electronic resource management system.     

Chipping Away at Serials Processing Backlogs in Technical Services

The author reports on the results of a survey on serials processing backlogs in technical services. Approximately 40% of responding libraries had some type of backlog of serials, both print and electronic. The types of materials in the backlogs and the factors that contributed to them are discussed, together with the storage of backlogged materials and the public's access to them. The study examines possible methods to reduce the backlog and perhaps prevent future backlogs in serials processing.     

Children's understanding of nutritional information presented in breakfast cereal commercials

This study examined children's understanding of commercial network techniques—both audio and video—designed to communicate the “balanced breakfast” concept. Data revealed a general lack of concept understanding.

Stereotypical Portrayals of Emotionality in News Photos

This research content analyzed the news photographs of a major U.S. daily newspaper to examine the emotional portrayals of individuals in different gender, age, and ethnic subgroups. A multidimensional measure of emotion (pleasure, arousal, dominance) was used. A total of 1,595 individuals were coded. The results demonstrate that emotionality was stereotyped to some degree, particularly in relation to women, ethnic minorities, and senior citizens. Specifically, African Americans were depicted as excited whereas Asian Americans were seen as calm. Women were portrayed as happy and teens were shown as sad. The results support the social construction of emotion and suggest that the news media play a role in framing and constructing emotional meaning with regard to different subgroups in American society.
