Education,population trends and technological change

Relationships among population growth, technological change and education are complex. The theory of quantity-quality trade-offs in numbers and education of children has limited applicability where immediate contributions of children to the household economy are urgent. In the long run, nevertheless, high rates of formation of human capital and high rates of population growth are incompatible. Of special importance to technological progress is the association between education and ability to learn rapidly in the post-school years. Demographic developments are contributing to widening economic gaps among Third World countries, some of which promise increasingly to challenge the industrial leaders.

La convention portant création de l'Institut Supérieur Franco-Allemand de Techniques et d'Economie de Sarreguemines (I.S.F.A.T.E.S.), passée entre le Gouvernement de la République Française et le Gouvernement de la République Fédérale d'Allemagne, a été signée le 15 septembre 1978 au sommet franco-allemand d'Aix-la-Chapelle.     

Le réseau des centres de recherche pédagogique de Suisse romande

The necessity of coordinating independent school systems has led French-speaking Switzerland to develop so-called «evaluative» research. This article presents this particular branch of education science, stressing the value of a cooperative and multi-disciplinary approach. The role of such research in the ongoing adaptation of teaching methods, as well as its possible contribution to more fundamental research, is illustrated.

In this report I shall simply attempt to give you an idea of the purport of these debates. On no account can I deal in detail with the contributions, nor can I do their quality justice. In the absence of our Indian friends (Arunachalam of Madras) we have had the privilege of benefitting from an introduction with Professor Lemoigne's paper. He set the scene for us remarkably well and gave us a referential lexical framework that was to serve us throughout this session.
