To test the lexical restructuring hypothesis among bilingual English‐language learners, English phonological awareness (PA), English vocabulary and ethnic language vocabulary (Mandarin Chinese, Malay or Tamil) were assessed among 284 kindergarteners (168 Chinese, 71 Malays and 45 Tamils) in Singapore. A multi‐level regression analysis showed that English vocabulary, in interaction with mother's education, statistically significantly predicted Singaporean children's PA; ethnic language vocabulary did not. Thus, the present study supports the lexical restructuring hypothesis that growth in vocabulary changes how lexical items are stored, leading to the development of PA. Home language practices, as represented by mother's education, may also enhance children's PA after a threshold of English vocabulary is reached. In addition, specific ethnic language (Chinese, Malay or Tamil) was a statistically significant predictor of PA, suggesting that orthographic depth as well as syllabic complexity of a bilingual's other language may influence their development of English PA. 相似文献

This study implemented eye-tracking technology to understand the impact of different multimedia instructional materials, i.e.,
five successive pages versus a single page with the same amount of information, on information-processing activities in 21
non-science-major college students. The findings showed that students demonstrated the same number of eye fixations during
information searching and spent the same amount of time on the overall instructional materials regardless of format. However,
the total number of eye fixations on the picture areas was significantly greater for the multiple-page than for the single-page
presentation. A significant difference was found in the duration of students’ eye fixation durations on the picture areas
under the two conditions, with students spending more time on the picture area of the multiple-page than of the single-page
presentation. Greater pupil size was found when participants viewed the multiple-page presentation, implying that this presentation
format was associated with a higher cognitive load. The participants’ eye-movement data for specific areas was recorded and
analyzed to determine students’ information processing patterns and strategies and for triangulation with the quantitative
findings. Discussion of the research findings and suggestions for future research are provided. 相似文献

In geographical areas bordering those of other states, the function of educational systems, as the means for states to foster their citizens, is challenged by ambiguities and tensions connected to intercultural experiences. In this article, I illustrate some of the findings from a project that studies religious education in four border areas around the Baltic Barents Sea, by bringing forward the case of a school teacher who teaches Orthodox religious education (ORE), in a town in Finland close to the border with Russia. This essay examines Green Day's “Jesus of Suburbia” as an artifact and reflection of suburban American punk culture. It looks at how music, lyrics, and the ethos of the performer interact to create a message that fostered identification between speaker and audience by using Sellnow and Sellnow's Langer-based illusion of life perspective.
