In this article I examine a recent development in online communication, the immersive virtual worlds of Massively Multiplayer
Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). I argue that these environments provide a distinct form of online experience from the
experience available through earlier generation forms of online communication such as newsgroups, chat rooms, email and instant
messaging. The experience available to participants in MMORPGs is founded on shared activity, while the experience of earlier
generation online communication is largely if not wholly dependent on the communication itself. This difference, I argue,
makes interaction in immersive virtual worlds such as MMORPGs relevantly similar to interaction in the physical world, and
distinguishes both physical world and immersive virtual world interaction from other forms of online communication. I argue
that to the extent that shared activity is a core element in the formation of friendships, friendships can form in immersive
virtual worlds as they do in the physical world, and that this possibility was unavailable in earlier forms of online interaction.
I do, however, note that earlier forms of online interaction are capable of sustaining friendships formed through either physical
or immersive virtual world interaction. I conclude that we cannot any longer make a sharp distinction between the physical
and the virtual world, as the characteristics of friendship are able to be developed in each. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare changes in aerobic condition, strength, and muscular endurance following 8 weeks of endurance rowing alone or in combination with weight-training. Twenty-two elite rowers were assigned to (1) rowing (n = 10, 250-270 km · week?1) or (2) rowing (n = 12, 190-210 km · week?1) plus four weight-training sessions each week. Pre and post mean and standardized effect-size (ES) differences in aerobic condition (watts at 4 mmol · L?1) and strength (isometric pull, N), prone bench-pull (6-repetition maximum, 6-RM), 5- and 30-repetition leg-press and 60-repetition seated-arm-pull (J, performed on a dynamometer) normalized by body mass and log-transformed were analysed, after adjusting for gender. The standardized differences between groups were trivial for aerobic condition (ES [±90% CI] = 0.15; ±0.28, P = 0.37) and prone bench-pull (ES = 0.27; ±0.33, P = 0.18), although a moderate positive benefit in favour of rowing only was observed for the seated-arm-pull (ES = 0.42; ±0.4, P = 0.08). Only the weight-training group improved isometric pull (12.4 ± 8.9%, P < 0.01), 5-repetition (4.0 ± 5.7%, P < 0.01) and 30-repetition (2.4 ± 5.4%, P < 0.01) leg-press. In conclusion, while gains in aerobic condition and upper-body strength were comparable to extensive endurance rowing, weight-training led to moderately greater lower-body muscular-endurance and strength gains. 相似文献

In this study, we investigated trunk coordination during rate-controlled bipedal vertical dance jumps. The aims of the study were to investigate the pattern of coordination and the magnitude of coordination variability within jump phases and relative to phase-defining events during the jump. Lumbar and thoracic kinematics were collected from seven dancers during a series of jumps at 95 beats per minute. The vector coding technique was used to quantify the pattern and variability of trunk coordination. Coordination was predominantly anti-phase during propulsion and landing. Mean coordination variability peaked just before the landing phase and at the transition from landing to propulsion phases, and was lowest during the propulsion phase just before toe-off. The results indicate that peaks in variability could be explained by task and phase-specific biomechanical demands. 相似文献
