ABSTRACT This study sought to investigate the opioid epidemic impact on North Carolina public libraries. Libraries in half of all 100 counties were chosen through a random, geographically systematic process, and structured interviews were completed with library directors. Twenty directors were interviewed, representing 28 counties. All reported their communities were affected; nine reported direct impacts on library function. Fifteen directors felt libraries should be involved in response; some felt Narcan administration was beyond library purview. Two libraries reported having Narcan available; five reported providing staff training. Given librarians’ willingness to respond, it is time to provide necessary support for those efforts. 相似文献

Over the past two decades, the short supply of teachers of color in elementary and secondary public schools has drawn the
attention of policymakers and educators alike. To address the widening cultural chasm between teachers and their students,
a variety of initiatives that aim to recruit people of color into teaching have been launched. Little attention has been paid,
however, to articulating a research-based rationale for increasing the diversity in the ranks of teachers. This gap in the
professional literature renders ongoing teacher diversity efforts vulnerable given the emphasis placed these days on research-based
evidence in making decisions regarding the proper use of limited public resources, including funding for education. The purpose
of this article is to address the noted gap in the literature. From an extensive review of the literature, we identified three
major arguments for diversifying the teaching force and assessed the extent to which they are validated by empirical research.
The results are reported, and implications of the findings for research and practice are discussed. 相似文献

A natural language based system has been used to author and mark short-answer free-text assessment tasks. Students attempt the questions online and are given tailored and relatively detailed feedback on incorrect and incomplete responses, and have the opportunity to repeat the task immediately so as to learn from the feedback provided. The answer matching has been developed in the light of student responses to the questions. A small number of the questions are now in low-stakes summative use, alongside other e-assessment tasks and tutor-marked assignments, to give students instantaneous feedback on constructed response items, to help them to monitor their progress and to encourage dialogue with their tutor. The answer matching has been demonstrated to be of similar or greater accuracy than specialist human markers. Students have been observed attempting the questions and have been seen to respond in differing ways to both the questions themselves and the feedback provided. Current approaches to workplace learning emphasize designing communities of practice that are intended to support both formal and informal knowledge acquisition. This article presents the design and research of a knowledge‐based community of practice for Subaru, based on principles outlined by Scardamalia (2002) and Zhang, Scardamalia, Lamon, Messina, and Reeve (2007). The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which participants' interactions in the online community showed evidence of individual and collective knowledge building. We found evidence of knowledge building within online discussions in these areas: interactions around improvement of ideas, connection to workplace knowledge and practices, and building on or adopting the ideas of others. We also found significant gains in scores on an assessment of workplace customer service after participation in the online community of practice. 相似文献

It is well over 20 years since information and communication technologies (ICT) was first included as part of a future vision
for Australia’s schools. Since this time numerous national policies have been developed, which collectively articulate an
official discourse in support of a vision for ICT to be embedded in our schools, and routinely used by ‘digital’ learners
and ‘competent’ teachers alike. The purpose of this paper is to critique how ICT, teachers and learners are positioned in
this vision by an analysis of national school-education ICT policies from 1989 to the present day, including the National
Goals of Schooling policies, the Learning in an Online World suite of policies, several Ministerial Statements relating to
ICT and the recent A Digital Education Revolution policy. This paper suggests that determinist views of technology and a utopian
vision underpin these representations, which creates a flawed, future vision for ICT in school education and its use by teachers

Prevalence rates of autism spectrum disorder have risen dramatically over the past few decades (now estimated at 1:50 children). The estimated total annual cost to the public purse in the United States is US$137 billion, with an individual lifetime cost in the United Kingdom estimated at between £0.8 million and £1.23 million depending on the level of functioning. The United Nations Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has enshrined full and equal human rights—for example, for inclusion, education and employment—and there is ample evidence that much can be achieved through adequate support and early intensive behavioural interventions. Not surprisingly, most governments worldwide have devised laws, policies, and strategies to improve services related to autism spectrum disorder, yet intriguingly the approaches differ considerably across the globe. Using Northern Ireland as a case in point, we look at relevant governmental documents and offer international comparisons that illustrate inconsistencies akin to a “postcode lottery” of services. 相似文献

As cesarean rates have climbed to almost one-third of all births in the United States, current research and professional organizations have identified letting labor begin on its own as one of the most important strategies for reducing the primary cesarean rate. At least equally important, letting labor begin on its own supports normal physiology, prevents iatrogenic prematurity, and prevents the cascade of interventions caused by labor induction.
