The implementation of virtual microscopy in the teaching of pathology at the Bloomington, Indiana extension of the Indiana University School of Medicine permitted the assessment of student attitudes, use and academic performance with respect to this new technology. A gradual and integrated approach allowed the parallel assessment with respect to both the virtual and optical microscopes. Student survey data indicated that the virtual imaging technology was enthusiastically received, and aggregate grade comparisons with the previous classes showed no decrease in content mastery. Survey questions assessing a variety of parameters reveal improved time and resource utilization, as well as increased student collaboration. Previous research raised questions on the validity of survey studies with the teen population. As one response, our team implemented a mixed-methods study to evaluate an evidence-based, interactive curriculum, Wise Guys, which is designed to promote healthy relationships and sexual behavior in young men ages 4–17. The current study included a Youth Advisory Group, focus groups, and a video-journaling project to delineate teens' thoughts on the most salient aspects of Wise Guys, and we used these to develop a stakeholder-informed survey instrument. The survey was administered via REDCap, a computer-based medium via phones and mobile devices. Quantitative survey analyses revealed significant positive changes in study constructs. Qualitative interpretations provided rich data that validated the survey findings. Community engagement in the research process and mixed methods may provide the infrastructure for future research and evaluation efforts related to teens.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationships among vocabulary breadth, vocabulary depth, reading comprehension, and reading rate among college‐aged students. While the relationships of some of these variables have been explored in previous research, the current study's focus on the role of vocabulary depth on the literacy measures within a sample of skilled readers is new and produced several interesting findings. First, consistent with the hypotheses, both vocabulary breadth and depth were significantly correlated with reading comprehension and reading rate. Second, while both types of vocabulary knowledge explained unique variance in reading comprehension, only vocabulary breadth explained unique variance in reading rate. Finally, although vocabulary breadth was significantly correlated with both of the vocabulary depth measures, the two depth measures were not significantly correlated with each other. This work implies that a strong depth of vocabulary affects reading comprehension, in addition to the well‐established relationship between vocabulary breadth and comprehension.  相似文献

Since the mid-1980s, a number of East Asian societies have consistently performed well in international tests, and their education systems have emerged as models of ‘best practice’, including Hong Kong, which has been extensively referenced by politicians and their advisers in England. In parallel, local dissatisfaction with the education system in Hong Kong has prompted major education reforms. This mismatch between the perceptions of the Hong Kong education system of the two policy communities is explored using documentary analysis and interviews with policymakers and other key stakeholders. We analyse the ways in which features of Hong Kong’s education system are reconstructed and projected in policymaking in England and argue that the referencing to Hong Kong in England is akin to a form of political theatre, reminiscent of a pantomime, with stereotyped villains, heroes and fairy godmothers, narratives of good conquering evil, and comical set-pieces. We argue that these elements provide the means for both constructing and validating simple causal claims and their associated policy actions.  相似文献

Research in teacher education repeatedly suggests that the background and underlying beliefs held by pre-service teachers about teaching and assessment act to shape their interpretations of ideas, powerfully influencing their praxis and their developing teacher identity. This paper explores how a young New Zealand secondary science teacher, raised and educated in Māori-medium and then English-medium New Zealand schools, develops his identity as a teacher as he navigates a range of educational contexts and experiences. His views on assessment provide a focus. The paper presents a case study drawn from a two-year longitudinal study, comprising a series of interviews with the teacher, as he transitioned from a university graduate to a qualified science teacher working in his first school. The complexity of teacher identity development is highlighted, particularly for teachers for whom cultural identity and indigenous world view is important. It suggests that beginning teachers need more time in their pre-service teacher education to reflect on the influence their formative educational experiences have on who they are becoming as a teacher.  相似文献

The research goals were to obtain an understanding of who the users of e-books in the NHS are, what they are using e-books for, and when and how they use them. This article presents the methodology used and the findings from the research. It also explores the outputs and next steps from the research, both for the individual countries and collectively. The Five Nations group, (library leads in England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales) commissioned research into healthcare staff use and non-use of e-books to understand the behaviours, needs and expectations of healthcare staff and to identify shared challenges around e-books to inform policy and practice.  相似文献

The Williams Committee of Inquiry into Education and Training presented its three-volume report to the Federal Government in February 1979 after nearly two and a half years of collecting and collating data and opinions, interviewing, discussing and trying to reach agreement on its final responses to a wide and complex brief that covered the organization, duality and practical efficiency of Australia's educational and training systems up to the year 2000.The central part of this paper is divided into four main sections. The first three sections come under the headings of Efficiency, Accountability and Flexibility. These headings represent an attempt to identify the main elements in a guiding theme that runs through the Committee's brief.Efficiency and Accountability relate to the tightening up of the system and they act as major elements in the Committee's discussion of the relationship between the Federal and State authorities: the interaction between the three parts of the post-secondary sector: the organization and operation of the institutions, and the performance of staff and students. The Committee thus progressively narrowed the field of view from a systemswide one to a focus on file individual institutions and prefaced its recommendations with calculations on the future costs of post-secondary education and discussion of the demographic projections for future enrolments. The Committee's findings and recommendations present a case for improved information, co-ordination and rationalization at all levels and provide checklists which might guide the authorities and the institutions in the re-assessment of their roles and functions.Under the third subject heading Flexibility - we discuss the range of options from which the institutions were encouraged to choose in their attempt to achieve efficiency and accountability. In other words, the options or paths suggested all lead in the same direction - towards economic survival - but some room is made along the way for increased educational opportunity. The Committee allows for reshuffling within the system, but not explicitly for the creation of a new system.The fourth section in this paper deals specifically with the likely fates of the universities, especially the small universities. The potential cumulative effect of the recommendations here is the possible evolution of two models of universities: firstly, universities operating on a traditional basis but augmented by special research centres, and secondly. universities operating in close relationship with the other parts of the post-secondary sectors and offering, for example, some sub-degree courses. The latter class would not he excluded from the research role and the pursuit of excellence but the advantage for the attraction of both funds and students would prohahly lie with the research institutions. The positive aspect in the Report's finding is. perhaps, its spur to the ingenuity and tenacity of the younger universities especially to employ fully the tactics of flexibility.We conclude with a summary appraisal of the nature of hoth the Committee's task and its findings. The main lines of argument pursued in the paper are then brought together to give an appreciation of the likely impart which the Report of the Committee of inquiry into Education and Training will have on Australian university education in particular in the next two decades.  相似文献

This literature review explored educational change trends as reflected in the first 15 years of the Journal of Educational Change (JEC), from 2000 to 2014. The examination of 52 articles accounting for 61% of the Journal’s historical citations indicated that the JEC has evolved through five periods, which relate to ‘waves of educational change’ beyond the Journal itself. At the center of this development there has been a process of de-centering of Anglo-American perspectives on educational reform, pushed both by an increasing pessimism among U.S. and U.K. scholars regarding their countries’ reforms and by systematic evidence that other educational systems are achieving better student learning outcomes. The aforementioned evolution also shows a shift from more conceptual works by the field’s historical leaders toward more empirical research conducted by emergent scholars. After discussing the predominant concept of educational change, the major silences in the reviewed literature, and what this evolution in the JEC says about the field of educational change at large, the paper ends reflecting on challenges as a new generation of scholars begins to enter the conversation.  相似文献

Coauthor Edwards has developed and delivered an undergraduate first year course in which students were encouraged to take more responsibility for their own learning. The techniques used included giving students responsibility for:

    making self-assessments of their own work, and the marks to be awarded for it

    arranging their own visits, individually or in small groups, to public or private organisations

    liaising with external lecturers, and agreeing the content of their lectures with them

    keeping their own diaries of work plans and achievements

  • 6

    arranging and moderating their own computer-based electronic conference.


Coauthor Sutton was invited to be an external observer of the operation of the course. He met the students in large and small groups on several occasions; observed the processes involved in self-assessment; and used two questionnaires to help elicit the students' feelings about the course. This article discusses the course, its content, the learning methods used, the students' reactions, and the results obtained.  相似文献

In early 2020, the Covid-19 crisis forced medical institutions worldwide to convert quickly to online platforms for content delivery. Although many components of medical education were adaptable to that format, anatomical dissection laboratory lost substantial content in that conversion, including features of active student participation, three-dimensional spatial relationships of structures, and the perception of texture, variation, and scale. The present study aimed to develop and assess online anatomy laboratory sessions that sought to preserve benefits of the dissection experience for first-year medical students. The online teaching package was based on a novel form of active videography that emulates eye movement patterns that occur during processes of visual identification, scene analysis, and learning. Using this video-image library of dissected materials, content was presented through asynchronous narrated laboratory demonstrations and synchronous/active video conference sessions and included a novel, video-based assessment tool. Data were obtained using summative assessments and a final course evaluation. Test scores for the online practical examination were significantly improved over those for previous in-person dissection-based examinations, as evidenced by several measures of performance (Mean: 2015–2019: 82.5%; 2020: 94.9%; P = 0.003). Concurrently, didactic test scores were slightly, but not significantly, improved (Mean: 2015–2019: 88.0%; 2020: 89.9%). Student evaluations of online sessions and overall course were highly positive. Results indicated that this innovative online teaching package can provide an effective alternative when in-person dissection laboratory is unavailable. Although this approach consumed considerable faculty time for video editing, further development will include video conference breakout rooms to emulate dissection small-group teamwork.  相似文献
