The effects of school quality on income

This paper uses a unique data set created by merging the Panel Study of Income Dynamics with school data from the Common Core of Data to examine the relationship between school expenditures and earnings. I find that school expenditures are related to earnings, and also positively affect the returns to schooling. This is particularly important given recent papers that have found no effect because this study is able to observe wages at later ages and is estimated for males and females. Robustness estimates find that if the sample were only observed at young ages, or estimated for white males, as has been done previously, the results would not hold. Therefore, it appears that even using an individual-level data set with students educated in this half of the century, school spending affects earnings.     

Providing Health Sciences Services in a Joint-Use Distributed Learning Library System: An Organizational Case Study

The purpose of this organizational case study is to describe the complexities librarians face when serving a multi-campus institution that supports both a joint-use library and expanding health sciences academic partnerships. In a system without a centralized health science library administration, liaison librarians are identifying dispersed programs and user groups and collaborating to define their unique service and outreach needs within a larger land-grant university. Using a team-based approach, health sciences librarians are communicating to integrate research and teaching support, systems differences across dispersed campuses, and future needs of a new community-based medical program.     

The Boundaries of BookTube

Thanks to the sociotechnical capabilities of the Internet, readers, young and old, have been able to establish a vibrant community centered on a shared love of Young Adult novels. On YouTube this community is known as BookTube; here readers review, critique, and endlessly discuss Young Adult books. Within this community there are several popular BookTube “celebrities” who function as boundary spanners—connecting everyday readers to authors and publishers. This innovative use of social media by Young Adult readers has helped to create a community that transcends the isolated and solitary boundaries usually associated with reading.
