Training for Film and Television in the United Kingdom

Abstract

This article traces the development of training for Britain's film and television industry from the mid‐1970s to the present time. It highlights the range of training opportunities currently available, linking these to government training policies in general and to the specific problems of this industry. The evolution of college and university courses, industry‐based initiatives, the relationship between media education and media training and the difficulties of financing training are all addressed, together with some very recent developments which may further influence the quantity and quality of training available over the next decade.     

An Evaluation Tool for Reflective Activities in Trades Training: Gilbert's Worthy Performance Theorem Reformulated

Despite pervasive advocacy, there is little empirical support for reflective activities' effect on performance. This has made performance‐focused professionals reluctant to incorporate reflective activities into training interventions, particularly in industries with performance standards for ensuring stakeholder welfare, such as in the building and construction trades. In this article, I present an evaluation tool based on Gilbert's worthy performance theorem for identifying how reflective activities affect performance in trades training. I first outline the requirements for constructing an effective evaluation tool for trades training and next detail the tool's structure. I conclude by discussing its potential applications and implications for research and practice.     

Comparison of the validity of four fall-related psychological measures in a community-based falls risk screening

We examined the measurement properties offall-related psychological instruments with a sample of 133 older adults (M age = 74.4 years, SD = 9.4). Measures included the Comprehensive Falls Risk Screening Instrument, Falls-efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC), modified Survey ofActivities and Fear ofFalling in the Elderly (mSAFFE), Consequences of Falling (CoF), Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), and 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). The FES-I, ABC, mSAFFE, and CoF were significantly correlated with each othe, with SF-36, and with mobility. The ABC and mSAFFE were significantly correlated with PASE. The ABC differentiated between fallers and nonfallers and predicted total falls risk. Findings can assist with the selection of psychological instruments in a falls risk screening context.
