Novel protein controls growth regulators in rice

A recent study by CAS researchers could add new dimensions to the understanding of downstream signaling mechanism of Brassinosteroids(BRs), a group of plant growth regulators, in rice. Their work was published by the August 21 issue of the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).     

China''''s biggest zoological museum opens in Kunming

The opening ceremony for the Kunming Museum of Zoology was held at the CAS Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ) on 31 October, 2006 in the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province. With nearly10,000 animal specimens that could be put on display,the museum boasts the largest of its kind in China. The Museum opened to the public on 6 November.     

Cleaning up the future of coal

CAS is making efforts to seek green solutions to address the pollution problem of the traditional forms of coal utilization. For instance, as SONG Jianlan reports, a research team from the Taiyuan-based CAS Institute of Coal Chemistry has developed clean, efficient ways to convert coal into liquefied fuels.     

Structural and Functional Studies of Ribosome-inactivating Proteins and Ribosomal RNA

A plant's ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a group of toxic proteins. Theoretically, they can be employed as a tool enzyme in the exploration of the structure and function of the ribosomal RNA; in practical application, they can be used as an insecticide in agriculture, for preparation of immuno-toxic protein to kill cancer cells or against viral infection in medicine.     

Happy birthday to the one-year-old brainchild of CAS-MPG partnership

A symposium marking the first anniversary of the CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology(PICB), the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences(SIBS), was held on 27 October, 2006 in Shanghai. Scholars from both within and outside the institute were invited to make presentations on hot topics and frontier areas in the field.

通过对美国科技政策科学研究计划(SciSIP)的研究内容、研究成果、研究方法及影响力进行文献计量学及可视化等分析,希望能够更加全面地把握科技政策科学的前沿趋势。分析发现SciSIP计划主要研究内容包括:(1)创新的测量和跟踪;(2)结构和过程对科学的影响;(3)企业家精神和企业在创新中的作用;(4)知识的创造,应用和传播;(5)科学政策的实施;(6)科学创新研究的新方法。其中(6)采用的研究方法较为多样,(1)采用的主要研究方法为文献计量学等。SciSIP成果对科技政策科学研究产生了广泛影响,但对科技政策制定方面的影响主要集中在"科学对创新和竞争力的影响"。     

International experimental zone to be created for thermonuclear fusion

The Institute of Plasma Physics (ASIPP) under the CAS Hefei Institutes of Physical Sciences, a Chinese partner in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Program, is going to establish an international experimental zone for thermonuclear fusion in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province. With a total area up to 13 hectares, its work on land acquisition has been completed.
