This research project addresses different issues in the field of the experimental embryology, ranging from animal fertilization to cloning.     

ZHANG Fusui honored with a prize by US National Shellfisheries Association

In recognition of his valuable work to the marine shellfish farming research, Prof. ZHANG Fusui, a marine biologist and aquaculture expert from the CAS Institute of Oceanology, was honored with a prize of outstanding contributions by the US National Shellfisheries Association on 1 March.     

Targeting DNA-repair systems brings hopes to cancer patients

CAS researchers have recently raised a hypothesis to circumvent tumor resistance to radio- and chemo-therapy and to enhance the efficacy of DNAdamaging agents by interfering with DNA repair. "There are emerging anticancer therapeutic opportunities in targeting DNA-repair systems," they asserted.     

ZHU Rixiang： New leader of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics

Prof. XIAO Liye, an expert in superconducting technology, has been appointed new director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering(IEE), a research arm of CAS dedicating to the promotion of technical level of power generation and electrical equipment manufacturing.     

International experimental zone to be created for thermonuclear fusion

The Institute of Plasma Physics (ASIPP) under the CAS Hefei Institutes of Physical Sciences, a Chinese partner in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Program, is going to establish an international experimental zone for thermonuclear fusion in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province. With a total area up to 13 hectares, its work on land acquisition has been completed.     

Chinese Soil Taxonomy

Soil is a kind of natural resources on which human survival relies. Because the soil is always in a state of uneven continuum, it is difficult to have a complete set of unified standards for its classification. China is a country unparallelly rich in types of soil resources in the world, so the formulation of a soil classification is not only conducive to the sustainable agricultural development and eco-environment reconstruction in China, but also a contribution to the world soil research.     

WANG Feiyue honored as distinguished scientist by AC

Prof. WANG Feiyue, a renowned scholar in intelligent control from the CAS Institute of Automation, has been selected by the New York-based Association for Computing Machinery （ACM） as a distinguished scientist for his contributions to both the practical and theoretical aspects of computing and information technology. Altogether, 13 scientists received the honor across the world in 2007.     

Stern-Gerlach effect goes chiral

Prof. SUN Changpu from the CAS Institute of Theoretical Physics and coworkers from University of Basel in Switzerland have worked out a way --at least in theory --to split a beam of molecules according to their chirality. The technique involves passing the molecules through three different laser beams and is similar to the famous Stern-Gerlach effect, whereby a beam of atoms passing through a magnetic field is split in two according to the atoms＇ spin states （Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 130403）.     

Green tea may protect brain cells against Parkinson'S

Does the consumption of green tea,widely touted to have beneficial effects on health,also protect brain cells? As reported in the 15 December, 2007 issue of Biological Psychiatry, studies by CAS researchers indicate this may be the case. A research team led by Prof.ZHAO Baolu from the State Key Laboratory of Brain & Cognitive Science affiliated to the CAS Institute of Biophysics investigated the effects of green tea polyphenols,a group of naturally
