Conservative critiques of education and proposals for reform show striking similarities in Canada, Britain and the US. All seem to reflect what Habermas referred to as “the affirmative stance towards social modernity and the denigration of cultural modernity”. Using a mixed methods, multilevel research design, this pilot inquiry explored the relationship between college faculty professional development and the academic achievement of diverse students by coupling two separate links: (a) the effects that professional development activities have on improving teaching strategies, and (b) the effects these teaching strategies have on student learning. Data were collected from administrators, faculty, and students to discover what teaching strategies are being used and, in their view, how these strategies affect learning outcomes. Data sources included a survey, documents, interviews, and observations. The case study institution is a New Mexico community college, and the research focuses on two academic programs with 145 students enrolled. Data analyses revealed three main themes: (a) faculty development and its link to teacher effectiveness and student learning outcomes are embedded in the mission, goals, and policies of the institution; (b) faculty development is considered vital, funding is always available, and faculty participate in on- and off-campus development activities to enhance their teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes; and (c) the institution focused on collecting and analyzing student learning outcomes data, but no data-driven means for assessing the effectiveness of faculty development activities existed. 相似文献

This study examined the relationship between polyvictimization, psychological distress, and trauma symptoms in college men and women. Childhood victimization was common among participants. Regression analyses revealed that polyvictimization (i.e., high cumulative levels of victimization) is a better predictor of psychological distress and trauma symptoms than is any individual category of victimization (i.e., sexual, physical, peer/sibling, child maltreatment, witnessing/indirect, or property crime). Gender did not moderate the relation between victimization and distress and trauma symptoms. Implications for counselors are discussed. 相似文献

Curriculum 2000 has meant significant change for the post-16 sector. New qualifications have been introduced (e.g. the new Advanced Subsidiary examination) and the number of students involved in education and training post-16 has increased. In this scenario how can the standards of new qualifications, particularly the new Advanced Subsidiary examinations, be compared with those of previous qualifications? One method is to use the prior achievement of candidates (i.e. GCSE results) as a basis for comparison of their results on subsequent qualifications (i.e. A levels and AS). The Document Delivery Services/Interlibrary Loan Unit and the Course Reserves Unit at the University of California, San Diego's Access Services Department both utilize the Konica Minolta PS7000 book scanner to deliver requested documents and post electronic reserve items. Though the hardware is the same in both units, unique service goals and software—Ariel Interlibrary Loan Document Transmission Software for DDS/ILL and Adobe Photoshop for Course Reserves—result in different issues and challenges. This study provides initial evidence supporting intended score interpretations for the purpose of assessing opportunity to learn (OTL) via an online teacher log. MyiLOGS yields 5 scores related to instructional time, content, and quality. Based on data from 46 middle school classes, the evidence indicated that (a) MyiLOGS has high usability, (b) its quarterly summary scores are relatively consistent over time, (c) summary scores based on 20 randomly sampled log days provide reliable estimates of teachers' respective yearly summary scores, and (d) most teachers report positive consequences from using the instrument. Agreements between log data from teachers and independent observers were comparable to agreements reported in similar studies. Moreover, several OTL scores exhibited moderate correlations with achievement and virtually nonexistent correlations with a curricular alignment index. Limitations and directions for future research to strengthen and extend this initial evidence are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Stroboscope photography and accelerometry techniques were used to measure rebound velocities of tennis balls from impact locations on the strings and vibration levels at the rotation point on the racket handle for both conventional and oversized tennis rackets. The oversized rackets demonstrated lower vibration levels and higher rebound velocities than their conventional counterparts when balls struck by the racket were compared along a transverse axis drawn perpendicular to the racket shaft and through the geometric center of the strings. These differences were, however, only significantly different (p < .01) at the impact location 6 cm along this axis toward the top edge of the racket. Higher rebound velocities were recorded at all impact points from the oversized rackets along the axis in line with the racket shaft. Significantly lower vibration levels were apparent at locations 4 cm, 6 cm, and 8 cm from the string center away from the racket handle. The lower vibration levels, particularly at the extremes of the racket face, in conjunction with higher rebound velocities, support the concept that this new racket design is of practical benefit to users. 相似文献

The influence of a bowling harness, as a training aid, was assessed as a means of modifying bowling technique. Thirty-three 13-year-old bowlers received a standardized 15 min of bowling coaching twice a week for 8 weeks. They were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The 13 participants in the intervention group used the bowling harness throughout the coaching, while also receiving verbal and visual feedback. The 20 participants in the non-harness group received the same visual and verbal feedback. Three-dimensional videography (200 Hz) of each player's bowling action enabled the calculation of transverse plane shoulder alignment counter-rotation, separation angle, lateral flexion and hyperextension of the trunk before and after the intervention. The restriction applied by the harness produced a significant reduction ( P = 0.006) in separation angle and forced the bowler to adopt a position at back-foot impact that reduced the 'twist' in the spine. However, it had no effect on restricting other aspects of trunk movement during the critical phases of the bowling action. No significant long-term modifications to technique were found after the coaching intervention when players were assessed without the harness. 相似文献

Abstract The effects of string tension and longitudinal racket flexibility on post-impact ball velocity were investigated in tennis. Six wooden rackets, two with flexible shafts, two with medium and two with stiff shafts were strung with synthetic gut at tensions of 245N (55 lb), 289N (65 lb) and 334N (75 lb). A pneumatically driven racket-arm was triggered by a stimulus from a photo-electric cell positioned at the exit nozzle of a ball machine so that impact occurred with the racket perpendicular to the path of the ball. New tennis balls were fired to impact each racket at the geometric center of the strings and 5 cm above the geometric center. The average horizontal velocity of the ball, both before and after impact, was determined using stroboscope photography. A significant interaction between racket stiffness and string tension was recorded for an inward ball velocity of 22.7 m/s and a racket velocity of approximately 6.8 m/s. String tension had no significant influence on rebound velocity for a stiff racket following impact with a moving racket. Medium and flexible rackets produced the highest coefficients of restitution when strung at 245N (55 lb) compared to 289N (65 lb) and 334N (75 lb). 相似文献
