Improving the productivity of mental health counselors was investigated with the use of an incentive system. Ten Masters-level mental health clinicians (5 females, 5 males) with a range of 1.5 to 17 years experience participated in the study. Single-case and between-group methodologies were used to assess the effects of the incentive on the number of direct client contact sessions conducted per day. Incentive payments were provided to clinicians above a minimum number per two-week pay period. The number of session credits improved from a baseline of 73.6 to a mean of 85.9 during the program. 相似文献

The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised was adapted to allow for the use of eye-gaze as a response mode. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a change in response mode altered test scores. Eighty children, aged 8–12 and without known motor or communication disabilities, completed both the adapted and standard forms of the test. Administration was counter balanced for form of PPVT-R and order of administration. No significant difference in standard scores was found between the eye-gaze and standard response modes. Will the proliferation of devices that provide the continuous archival and retrieval of personal experiences (CARPE) improve control over, access to and the record of collective knowledge as Vannevar Bush once predicted with his futuristic memex? Or is it possible that their increasing ubiquity might pose fundamental risks to humanity, as Donald Norman contemplated in his investigation of an imaginary CARPE device he called the “Teddy”? Through an examination of the webcam experiment of Jenni Ringley and the EyeTap experiments of Steve Mann, this article explores some of the social implications of CARPE. The authors’ central claim is that focussing on notions of individual consent and control in assessing the privacy implications of CARPE while reflective of the individualistic conception of privacy that predominates western thinking, is nevertheless inadequate in terms of recognizing the effect of individual uptake of these kinds of technologies on the level of privacy we are all collectively entitled to expect. The authors urge that future analysis ought to take a broader approach that considers contextual factors affecting user groups and the possible limitations on our collective ability to control the social meanings associated with the subsequent distribution and use of personal images and experiences after they are captured and archived. The authors ultimately recommend an approach that takes into account the collective impact that CARPE technologies will have on privacy and identity formation and highlight aspects of that approach. 相似文献

The Labour Government recently stated that access is a cornerstone of all its cultural policies, including those for museums and galleries. This paper therefore outlines a robust paradigm by means of which the impact of admission charges on access can be analysed. In applying that paradigm to museums, it demonstrates a number of analytical and theoretical red herrings which serve only to confuse a study of charges, including the zero marginal cost argument for free admission. Past research into text retrieval methods for the Web has been restricted by the lack of a test collection capable of supporting experiments which are both realistic and reproducible. The 1.69 million document WT10g collection is proposed as a multi-purpose testbed for experiments with these attributes, in distributed IR, hyperlink algorithms and conventional ad hoc retrieval.WT10g was constructed by selecting from a superset of documents in such a way that desirable corpus properties were preserved or optimised. These properties include: a high degree of inter-server connectivity, integrity of server holdings, inclusion of documents related to a very wide spread of likely queries, and a realistic distribution of server holding sizes. We confirm that WT10g contains exploitable link information using a site (homepage) finding experiment. Our results show that, on this task, Okapi BM25 works better on propagated link anchor text than on full text.WT10g was used in TREC-9 and TREC-2000 and both topic relevance and homepage finding queries and judgments are available. 相似文献

Gender matters in the classroom, but not in the way people may assume; girls are outperforming boys. Identity-Based Motivation (IBM) theory explains why: People prefer to act in ways that feel in-line with important social identities such as gender. If a behavior feels identity-congruent, difficulty is interpreted as meaning that the behavior is important, not impossible, but what feels identity-congruent is context-dependent. IBM implies that boys (and girls) scan the classroom for clues about how to be male (or female); school effort will feel worthwhile if successful engagement with school feels gender-congruent, not otherwise. A between-subjects experimental design tested this prediction, manipulating whether gender and success felt congruent, incongruent, or not linked (control). Students in the success is gender-congruent condition described more school-focused possible identities, rated their likely future academic and occupational success higher, and tried harder on an academic task (this latter effect was significant only for boys). 相似文献

There is a consensus that dyslexia is on a continuum with normal reading skill and that dyslexics fall at the low end of the
normal range in phonological skills. However, there is still substantial variability in phonological skill among dyslexic
children. Recent studies have focused on the high end of the continuum of phonological skills in dyslexics, identifying a
“surface” dyslexic, or “delayed” profile in which phonological skills are not out of line with other aspects of word recognition.
The present study extended this work to a longitudinal context, and explored differences among subgroups of dyslexics on a
battery of component reading skills. Third grade dyslexics (n=72) were classified into two subgroups, phonological dyslexics and delayed dyslexics, based on comparisons to younger normal
readers at the same reading level (RL group). The children were tested at two points (in third and fourth grade). The results
revealed that the classification of dyslexics produced reliable, stable, and valid groups. About 82 percent of the children
remained in the same subgroup category when retested a year later. Phonological dyslexics were lower in phoneme awareness
and expressive language. Delayed dyslexics tended to be slower at processing printed letters and words but not at rapid automatic
naming of letters, and relied more heavily on phonological recoding in reading for meaning than did phonological dyslexics.
A subset of the delayed dyslexics with the traditional “surface dyslexic” pattern (relatively high pseudoword and low exception
word reading) was also identified. The surface subgroup resembled the RL group on most measures and was not very stable over
one year. The results are discussed in light of current models of dyslexia and recent subgrouping schemes, including the Double-Deficit
