Parent Autonomy Support,Academic Achievement,and Psychosocial Functioning: a Meta-analysis of Research

A meta-analysis of 36 studies examining the relations between parent autonomy support (PAS) and child outcomes indicated that PAS was related to greater academic achievement and indicators of adaptive psychosocial functioning, including autonomous motivation, psychological health, perceived competence, engagement, and positive attitudes toward school, among other outcomes. The strongest relation emerged between PAS and psychological health. Results indicated that the strength of the PAS relation was stronger when PAS was reflective of both parents, rather than of just mothers or just fathers among five of six outcomes for which moderators could be examined. Moderator analyses also suggested that PAS correlations are stronger when the outcome is better aligned to the predictor and the relation between PAS and psychosocial outcomes may vary by grade level. Implications for theory and future research are discussed.     

From theft to racist brawl: the framing of Low Yat incident by Malaysian newspapers

This study aimed to conduct a framing analysis on the coverage of the Law Yat incident, whereby a theft case was escalated into racist brawl in Malaysia. The study compared the coverage of mainstream Malay-, English- and Chinese-language as well as alternative newspapers. The findings indicated that the newspapers reported the incident with different intensity, prominence, news sources, news frames and valence. It was found that the Law Yat incident has been highly racialized by irresponsible bloggers, social media users and politicians in the country. The findings also reflected that race and ethnicity issues remain highly politicized in Malaysia.     

Factors Influencing Retention of Gen Y and Non-Gen Y Teachers Working at International Schools in Asia

Quantitative studies on international-school teacher retention are few, especially studies that differentiate between Gen Y and non-Gen Y teachers. This article reports on the findings of a study that examined the relationship of job satisfaction factors to the likelihood of contract renewal by international-school teachers. Results from the study show statistically significant relationships between some factors of job satisfaction and contract renewal for teachers in Gen Y and non-Gen Y (Baby Boomers, Gen X) cohorts.     

The Experience of Parenting an Adolescent with Autism

This study used qualitative research methodology to investigate the experiences of parents of adolescents with autism. Eight parents, representing six separate family units, were interviewed. The primary objectives were to understand the experiences in the lives of the parents interviewed and identify needs of adolescents with autism and their families. Six consistent themes emerged from the interview data: (a) behavioural concerns, (b) social and communication concerns, (c) family‐related concerns, (d) education and related services, (e) relationships with professionals, and (f) independence and future concerns. The findings were discussed in relationship to previous research findings and service provision.

本文从翻译的目的、译文读者的接受能力以及与翻译相关的其他诸因素出发，就翻译实践中较为棘手的中国古代诗词的英译以及实用翻译中颇具特色的旅游资料的英译进行了一番分析，探讨了影响翻译的斡旋过程的各种可能因素．对这些因素的了解可以有助于翻译工作者更理性地选择适当的翻译手法来实现翻译的目的。     

Student teachers in the contact zone: developing critical intercultural ‘teacherhood’ in kindergarten teacher education

This paper reports on the results of a narrative-grounded investigation ofstudent teachers' intercultural experiences and learning during their teaching practice. Our interest is in the meaning of the intercultural contact zone and how education for diversities is conceptualised and reflected upon in Finnish teacher education. Critical event narratives were collected from 10 kindergarten student teachers' teaching practice portfolios where the focus was on observing and reflecting on diversities in education. Theoretically, the study relies on Pratt's theory of contact zone. The methods and conditions for supporting student teachers' understanding of diversities in teacher education are discussed.     

“What is a good digital library?” – A quality model for digital libraries

In this article, we elaborate on the meaning of quality in digital libraries (DLs) by proposing a model that is deeply grounded in a formal framework for digital libraries: 5S (Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, and Societies). For each major DL concept in the framework we formally define a number of dimensions of quality and propose a set of numerical indicators for those quality dimensions. In particular, we consider key concepts of a minimal DL: catalog, collection, digital object, metadata specification, repository, and services. Regarding quality dimensions, we consider: accessibility, accuracy, completeness, composability, conformance, consistency, effectiveness, efficiency, extensibility, pertinence, preservability, relevance, reliability, reusability, significance, similarity, and timeliness. Regarding measurement, we consider characteristics like: response time (with regard to efficiency), cost of migration (with respect to preservability), and number of service failures (to assess reliability). For some key DL concepts, the (quality dimension, numerical indicator) pairs are illustrated through their application to a number of “real-world” digital libraries. We also discuss connections between the proposed dimensions of DL quality and an expanded version of a workshop’s consensus view of the life cycle of information in digital libraries. Such connections can be used to determine when and where quality issues can be measured, assessed, and improved – as well as how possible quality problems can be prevented, detected, and eliminated.     

Research: Korean International Students' Expectations About Counseling

This study examined the counseling expectancies of Korean international students in the United States. The results indicated that Korean students expected to terminate counseling quickly if the process was viewed as unpleasant or did not seem to be immediately helpful. The Korean students expected to approach counseling as a classroom learning situation in which they could present problems, ask questions about the problems, and work on assignments to solve the problems. Implications for outreaching and counseling Korean international students are discussed.     

珠江三角洲稻区鼠类群落结构及演替研究

1985～1993年进行了鼠类群落组成、种间关系及群落演券规律研究．结果表明，珠江三角洲稻区的鼠类数量组成以小家鼠、黄毛鼠和板齿鼠为主，可划分两类群落类型．其鼠类数量组成均有极显著的季节波动，板齿鼠和黄毛鼠的生物g在A群落及B群落中均占绝大部分．板齿鼠与黄毛鼠的食性、栖息空间及活动节律相近．种间竞争较大．由于化学灭鼠及农田作物布局的改变．导致鼠类群落组成发生了显著的变动．
