This study examined the nature of science (NOS) views of lower elementary grade level students, including their views of scientists. Participants were 23 third‐grade African American students from two Midwest urban settings. A multiple instrument approach using an open‐ended questionnaire, semi‐structured interviews, a modified version of the traditional Draw‐A‐Scientist Test (DAST), and a simple photo eliciting activity, was employed. The study sought to capture not only the students' views of science and scientists, but also their views of themselves as users and producers of science. The findings suggest that the young African American children in this study hold very distinct and often unique views of what science is and how it operates. Included are traditional stereotypical views of scientists consistent with previous research. Additionally, participants expressed excitement and self‐efficacy in describing their own relationship with science, in and outside of their formal classrooms. Education is the only profession for whom the service recipient believes himself to be as knowledgeable as the service provider. Abstract

This paper reports on the validity of a 14-day recall measure of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) in a sample of Australian adults (N = 986). Submaximal cycle ergometry was used to assess physical work capacity per kilogram of body mass (pwc75/kg). The self-report energy expenditure estimates were used to categorize respondents as vigorously active, moderately active, and low active/sedentary. Multiple regression analyses showed that pwc75/kg increased significantly across energy expenditure categories for adults aged less than 40 years; that the vigorous and moderate activity categories had greater mean pwc75/kg values than the low/sedentary category for 40 to 59-year-olds; and, that there were no differences in pwc75/kg between activity categories for those aged 60 years or older.  相似文献

This article aimed at showing the degree of self‐disclosure of high ability youth to various persons. The degree of self‐disclosure was expressed in six categories: Attitudes and Opinions, Tastes and Interests, Work or Studies, Personality, Money, Body. The above mentioned categories were used by the subjects in self‐disclosure to: Mother, father, brother or sister, fiancé or fiancée, best friend, grandparents, relatives, friend and strangers (they are target persons). The tested group consisted of 32 persons: 26 students in the fourth and fifth year of university and 6 university graduates.  相似文献
