THE SUBVERSIVE CURRICULUM: WHAT RELIGIOUS EDUCATORS ARE LEARNING INFORMALLY AND INCIDENTALLY

This study examines the informal and incidental learning that occurred among ten religious educators in the Roman Catholic school system in Newfoundland. In phase one, two researchers conducted focus groups and administered questionnaires to collect data. In phase two, one of the researchers conducted individual interviews with study participants. The types of learning identified are classified into three categories: theological knowledge, professional knowledge, and knowledge about oneself. The learning reported is then discussed in relation to the informal‐ and incidental‐learning theory of Karen Watkins and Victoria Marsick.     

Balancing Tensions During Convergence: Duality Management in a Newspaper Company

Abstract

Media companies inherently face organizational tensions, as dual—artistic and commercial—orientations are part of their mission. Yet, it is still poorly understood what the existence of such tensions implies for managing media companies that undergo organizational changes to embrace technological convergence. Based on a case study with a European media company, this article argues that different organizational tensions exist and exemplifies this by characterizing structural, processual, and cultural tensions. This study finds that these tensions are interlinked, interdependent, and dynamic—namely, when media companies change, their inherent tensions are also likely to change. Thus, they need to be actively and comprehensively managed to avoid disfunctionalities. In fact, considering the different tensions in the reorganizing process might enhance its chances of success. Relocating the tension, enhancing perception of the tension, and providing training to increase awareness of employees emerge from this case as different strategies for managing tensions.

Practicum pairs: an alternative for first field experience in early childhood teacher education

This paper focuses on partnership between pairs of students in early childhood education during a teaching practicum in preschools and kindergartens. One hundred students enrolled in early childhood pre‐service teacher education programs at a large metropolitan Australian university were paired and placed in kindergartens and preschools with host teachers. The project aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of host teachers and students involved in the paired practicum which was evaluated qualitatively using semi‐structured surveys of host teachers and students. This paper identifies eight practices and two principles making this paired practicum successful or not successful.     

Professional ecologies shaping technology adoption in early childhood education with multilingual children

Strategic deployment of the digital world in educational ecosystems inhabited by multilingual children (4–6 years old), their teachers and their families is evolving in some communities. This study reveals the “actors” and communities that mediate the extent and the nature of engagement with new media in contexts of early childhood education, including evidence of partnership with teachers. Teachers and parents were found to be the “keystone species,” with the teacher the most influential mediator for young multilingual children. Empirical research into the interacting learning ecologies of young children in six early childhood centres and five associated schools is based on interviews with teachers and families plus photographs of the linguistic landscapes in these physical and digital ecosystems. Fragmented multiple perspectives on the education of young children and technology adoption are brought together with Davis’ Arena Framework of change with digital technologies in education. One early childhood education centre is mapped in a global arena to expose the co-evolution of education with technology that occurs in all levels, local through global. This clarifies the need for co-construction of policy and practice in these ecosystems so that that emergent bilinguals can have a better start in the digital world.

An Adult Learning Approach to Preparing Mentors and Mentees

Abstract

This article approaches mentorship through an adult education lens. The author argues that using an adult education design for the initial preparation and continuing professional education of mentors and mentees enhances the value of the educational experience by making it responsive to adult learning needs and by communicating the importance of continuous learning. From this perspective, mentorship is seen as having tremendous potential to make a major contribution to adult learning for educators. By contributing to a philosophy and practice of lifelong learning, mentorship can breathe new life into the education profession.
