What teachers think about what they can do with data: Development and validation of the data driven decision-making efficacy and anxiety inventory

Classroom level data driven decision-making (DDDM) involves the use of data to identify patterns of performance that reveal students’ academic strengths and weaknesses relative to established learning goals, and the planning of instructional practices to support academic success for all students. Although DDDM is not a new paradigm in education, little is known about what variables facilitate teacher adoption of DDDM practices. The aim of this work was to introduce two such variables, DDDM efficacy and DDDM anxiety, and a measure of these constructs, the DDDM efficacy and anxiety (3D-MEA) inventory. The 1728 participants in this study were K-12 teachers who had experienced varying levels of DDDM professional development in a Pacific Northwestern state. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 864) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 864) were utilized to evaluate the psychometric properties of the 3D-MEA Inventory. Results supported a five-factor model. A discussion of the results and their implications ensue.     

Snakes and ladders: stressing the role of meta-competencies for post-modern careers

Major global changes during the last decades have influenced the individual’s work-life and career. As a result of globalisation, increasing societal complexity and flexibility, careers have lost their linearity and predictability. Traditional models of career development no longer provide a comprehensive explanation for an adequate career development. New theoretical concepts such as protean and boundaryless career attitudes are presented as options to cope with the new situation. In addition, the development of career meta-competencies and skills are introduced as an approach to foster career self-management.     

合作网络、知识产权能力与区域自主创新程度:一个有调节的中介模型

随着区域经济竞争的加剧,创新已经成为区域保持经济持续增长的驱动力。在此背景下,从区域创新合作网络和知识产权能力的视角,研究影响区域自主创新发展的因素是具有重要意义的。首先,本文根据区域之间的创新合作矩阵,计算31个省份的网络特征指标值;然后,从知识产权创造、运用、保护、管理和服务等五个方面构建区域知识产权能力评价指标体系,借助主成分方法计算各省份的知识产权综合能力;最后,利用回归分析验证合作网络通过知识产权能力影响区域自主创新的路径以及开放度与制度因素的调节效应。结果发现：知识产权能力以及表征合作网络特征的集聚性、结构洞、度数中心性、接近中心性和中间中心性正向影响区域自主创新程度;知识产权能力在集聚性、结构洞、度数中心性、接近中心性和中间中心性对区域自主创新的影响中均起到部分中介作用;开放度正向调节知识产权能力与区域自主创新程度之间的关系,制度因素负向调节知识产权能力对自主创新程度的影响。本文的研究不仅理清了区域创新合作网络、知识产权能力影响区域自主创新的机制,而且为促进区域自主创新发展政策的制定提供了参考和借鉴。

Taiwanese families' perspectives on learning disabilities: an exploratory study in three middle schools

The purpose of this study was to investigate families' perspectives on learning disabilities (LD) in Taiwan. A researcher‐designed survey was sent out to families of children with or without LD from three middle schools. Data from 153 participants were gathered and analysed. The survey consisted of four sections, namely demographic information, children's reading performance, families' general understanding and perspectives of LD. Specifically, the last section of 54 Likert scale items designed to gather information about families' perspectives of LD was analysed with five domains: causes of LD (inherent or acquired), conceptions and misconceptions, attitudes (acceptance or rejection), disclosure of disabilities (willing or unwilling), and support. Results indicated that families were not familiar with educational services related to LD in schools. Additionally, families' experiences with people with disabilities resulted in different perspectives regarding the causes and conceptions about LD, and acquiring support. Families' perspectives on LD also correlated with personal characteristics, including the level of their children's reading performance, number of children and income level. The cultural implications of these findings interplay with an emphasis on academic performance are discussed.

应用型本科院校土力学课程教学实践反思与改革探索

土力学是土木工程等专业非常重要的课程,其教学效果的好坏对夯实学生的专业基础具有重要意义.针对近年来应用型本科院校土力学教学过程中出现的一些问题,从优化教学内容、改进教学方法、改革考核方式、加强年轻教师培养等方面提出一些建议.这些研究成果可望对应用型本科院校的土力学教学改革起到一定的借鉴作用.     

Teachers’ Interpretations of the Ethical Dimensions of Teaching on the Chinese Mainland: A Case Study of Two Secondary Schools in Shanghai

This paper highlights Chinese teachers’ ethical concerns in their relationships with students, colleagues, and students’ parents. Through a qualitative study of 26 teachers, it was found that the teachers were often trapped in a dilemma between teaching to students’ real development and teaching to the test. The ethics of professional collaboration were compromised by the dominant norms, including interpersonal harmony and respect for older teachers, and by competition among individual teachers to demonstrate good performance. Moreover, in a situation where parents’ trust was diminishing, teachers assumed certain teaching and caring responsibilities for children from disadvantaged families. It is suggested that the professionalization of teachers should provide them with more professional space to transform their ethical considerations into practice.
