The positive impact of undergraduate research experiences on students’ post-secondary success is well-documented. However, these conclusions are drawn from undergraduate students who already participate; very little research has explored the pathways by which students enter these experiences. Using data from a multi-institutional survey, we examined students’ reasons for participating and differences across institutions and demographic groups. Overall, students cited social and experiential reasons as key motivators for participation and a perceived lack of research readiness as a key barrier. Differences were also found across academic year. Implications from this study address issues of access, preparation, and institutional policies around undergraduate research. 相似文献

Anatomy education in most African countries is limited by an insufficient number of cadavers for students to undertake dissection. This already significant shortage is exacerbated by an increasing number of medical schools and students. Virtual dissections are impractical in alleviating such a shortfall in African anatomy education, and further cadaver supply is challenged by unethical and dubious sources. This study was designed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practice of whole body and organ donation by Nigerian anatomists with the aim of finding solutions to the problems associated with the availability of cadavers in Nigerian medical schools. Out of 46 anatomists that participated in the survey, only 23.9% would consider donating their whole bodies and 60.9% their organs. More than 95% of respondents did not believe that body bequests could become the sole source of cadavers for anatomic dissection in Nigeria. Age and gender were not statistically significant in the choice of being a body or organ donor. The unacceptability to one's family members regarding body donation was the major reason for respondents' unwillingness to make a whole body donation. None of the 14 medical schools sampled in this study have yet instituted a body registration and donation program. The anatomists showed a high level of knowledge and awareness of body bequest programs, which were not reflected by their attitudes and practice. Community engagement in higher education is a shift beyond the traditional roles of instruction and research. This paper presents a transnational view of community engagement developed from two case studies of universities in the Philippines and Australia. The study, revealed variations in the way community engagement is understood and implemented by universities across different countries. These variations are related to economic, social-cultural, political and organizational factors. The article presents a study on metalinguistic, cognitive and metacognitive abilities in university students. A sample of
353 students was recruited; 178 of which from scientific and 175 from humanistic Faculties, with gender balance (M = 178;
F = 175) whose age range was between 20 and 25 years old. They were administered a metalinguistic ability test that assesses
metalinguistic awareness at implicit and explicit levels (L and ML scores) and the Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices 38
(SPM38). In addition to the usual nonverbal administration of the matrices, candidates were asked to justify in written form
the reasons for the solution indicated in each item. Three scores were considered for the SPM38: the ordinary score based
on the number of correct nonverbal solutions (O.S.), a 7-point scale for assessing the argumentation of the correct solutions
(C.ARG.S.) and a 6-point scale for assessing the argumentation of the incorrect solutions (I.ARG.S.). Significant gender and
curriculum effects were found, with males and scientific students dominating at the nonverbal level while females and humanistic
students dominated in the argumentative abilities related to the matrices and in all the scores of the metalinguistic test.
A number of significant correlations were found between all the metalinguistic, cognitive and metacognitive abilities considered,
with a prominent role of the metalinguistic abilities at the explicit level (ML score) that show a clear argumentative structure
