Young children's learning and transfer of biological information from picture books to real animals

Preschool children (N = 104) read a book that described and illustrated color camouflage in animals (frogs and lizards). Children were then asked to indicate and explain which of 2 novel animals would be more likely to fall prey to a predatory bird. In Experiment 1, 3- and 4-year-olds were tested with pictures depicting animals in camouflage and noncamouflage settings; in Experiment 2, 4-year-olds were tested with real animals. The results show that by 4 years of age, children can learn new biological facts from a picture book. Of particular importance, transfer from books to real animals was found. These findings point to the importance that early book exposure can play in framing and increasing children's knowledge about the world.     

Towards an Indigenist,Gaian pedagogy of food: Deimperializing foodScapes in the classroom

ABSTRACT

This study takes food as its scape to propose an Indigenist, Gaian pedagogy and asks what food studies might reveal ecopedagogically for approaches to teaching about Indigenous matters in the context of environmental education and its research. Drawing on empirical research about food and Indigenous-settler relations in Australia, and through analysis of data amassed from student assignments on food sources conducted over a six- year period, I find that there is resistance to taking an Indigenist approach to critical, place-based education (PBE) even as Indigenous scholarship argues for its urgent need. Even more muted is the recognition of Gaian understanding of the need to preserve the languages of “Scapes” to help with this work.     

非英语专业医学本科生听力策略研究

本文对医学生听力水平与听力策略进行了调查,并研究了这两个变量之间的相关性。2012年12月大学英语四级考试听力部分试题用来区分受试的听力水平;听力策略问卷用来调查受试的听力策略使用情况。听力策略问卷的描述性分析表明受试对元认知策略的使用更频繁,其次是认知策略和社交/情感策略。皮尔逊相关分析也表明高分组、中分组和低分组所使用的听力策略与他们的听力水平分别在p0.01和p0.05这两个层面呈现显著正相关。     

MAGIS: mobile augmented-reality games for instructional support

ABSTRACT

We present Mobile Augmented-Reality Games for Instructional Support (MAGIS), a framework for the development of mobile augmented-reality (AR) games for education. The framework supports off-the-shelf, state-of-the-art technologies that enable AR tracking and rendering on consumer-level mobile devices, and integrates these technologies with content-generation tools that simplify the development of educational AR games, especially those that extensively use narrative-based game design and player-location tracking such as location-based historical or museum adventure games. We use Igpaw: Intramuros, a proof-of-concept game developed using MAGIS, to help describe the current state of the framework and to show its efficacy for implementing outdoor location-based educational games, and we briefly outline future development plans to improve MAGIS’ AR support (especially those involving indoor scenarios) as well as to improve the instructional design and authoring phases of AR applications written using this framework.     

屈原生卒年考证

关于屈原生卒年,目前盛行"生于公元前340年,卒于公元前278年,享年62岁"的郭沫若说,笔者认为有误。笔者从屈原作品中重新推算,得出的结论为:生年为楚宣王二十七年,公元前343年,为戊寅年,卒年为顷襄王二十二年,享年六十六岁。
