Adding Net Value: The Nature of Online Education at a South African Residential Institution

Online learning is usually implemented as a component of distance learning, although this technology also has definite advantages for residential educational institutions. When addressing issues such as computer literacy, improved communication skills, problem-based learning, inclusion of real-life issues and exposing students to the working world, the online environment holds tremendous potential. The first year journalism students at the Technikon Pretoria, South Africa, were incorporated in a carefully designed online course with assignments and activities to supplement and enrich their learning experience. This paper will report on the strategy that was implemented and will offer some suggestions when teaching a residential course online. Lorsque l'on considère les problèmes comme l'aptitude À se servir de l'ordinateur, des aptitudes améliorés en communication, des apprentissages fondés sur l'étude de problèmes, l'inclusion de problèmes de la vie réelle et l'exposition des étudiants au monde du travail, l'environnement on-line offre un potentiel énorme. Les étudiants de la première année de journalisme au Technikon Pretoria, en Afrique du Sud ont été impliqués dans un cours on-line soigneusement planifié avec des devoirs et des activités qui complètent et enrichissent leur expérience d'apprentissage. Cet article fait rapport des stratégies qui ont été mise en m uvre et propose des suggestions pour un cours on-line en enseignement résidentiel. Online lernen beschränkt sich am allgemeinen auf den Fernunterricht, obwohl diese Technologie Vorteile für Bildungseinrichtungen in einigen Wohngebieten bietet. Wenn es um Fragen geht wie: Computerfertigkeiten, Kommunikationsfähigkeiten zu verbessern, lernen auf der Basis von Problemlösungen, die Einbeziehung von Themen aus dem wirklichen Leben und die Schüler auf die Arbeitswelt vorzubereiten, bietet das online Umfeld ein enormes Potential. Die Studenten des Erstsemester für Journalistik am Technikon Pretoria, Süd-Afrika, wurden mit einem wohl geplanten online Kurs inklusive Aufgabenstellung konfrontiert, um ihre Lernerfahrungen auszubauen. Dieser Artikel berichtet über die angewandte Strategie und macht Unterrichtsvorschläge unter Einbeziehung von online Kursen in Wohngebieten.     

Consequence Choice and Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities: Effects on Academic Engagement

The difficulties students identified with emotional and behavior disabilities present sometimes strain inclusive educators. General education teachers often find themselves ill equipped to provide effective support for both students with and without disabilities. An effective intervention that may hold promise for included students with academic and behavior problems involves the use of choice; more specifically, consequence choice, which provides students with the ability to select their own reinforcement. The current study examined the effects of choice of reinforcement via a single-subject multielement design with baseline for four students with emotional disturbance or behavior disabilities educated in an inclusion setting. With an increase in task difficulty, the behavior of two students indicated a functional relation between engagement and choice and two additional students demonstrated a functional relation between the presence and absence of reinforcement. Students did not distinguish academic behavior across the course of the study. The difficulty level of the instructional material, as well as the perceived preference of the reinforcers may play a role in study outcomes. Future directions follow study limitations and implications for inclusion practitioners.     

The educational use of videoconferencing in the arts faculty: shedding a new light on puppetry

It is important for learners to be exposed to the real working world during their training in order to prepare them for their professional lives. The Department of Entertainment Technology, under the leadership of Zuanda Badenhorst, conducted a very exciting project with the Handspring Puppet Company while also making use of the newest learning technologies made available by the Department of Telematic Education, with Instructional Designer Mandi Axmann and Technical Manager Anette Sadie, at the Technikon Pretoria. This article reviews the educational use of videoconferencing as well as various considerations when implementing this medium     

Living in Denial: The Relationship between Access Denied Turnaways and ILL Requests

Access denied turnaway statistics are provided to libraries to help with serials collection development, but very little research about turnaways is available. This article examines the relationship between access denied turnaways and interlibrary loan (ILL) requests at one institution in an attempt to deepen our understanding of turnaways. The study showed that there is a moderate correlation with an overall ILL requests to turnaways ratio of 11.4%. The strength of the relationship and the ILL requests to turnaways ratio do vary depending on the publisher/provider. The article also discusses potential explanations and implications as related to the relationship.
