Characteristics,Academic and Post-university Outcomes of Students with a Disability at the University of Newcastle

A cohort of 108 students with a disability, and a matched sample of students without a disability, were surveyed over a three-year period at the University of Newcastle. The purpose of the study was to examine the characteristics and academic outcomes for students with a disability because this group of students is significantly under-represented at Australian universities. Significant differences were found between some personal characteristics, academic performance, and outcomes following discontinuance or completion of study. The results are discussed within the context of disability legislation and policy in Australia.

The child nobody likes

Disliked children may experience unhappiness, loneliness, and considerable frustration during their early involvement in preschool centers and the early years of school. Teachers of young children, realizing the effects of being disliked on self-esteen and academic, social, and personal growth, must work toward either changing the causes of the problem or attempting to change peer and teacher behaviour toward the disliked child.M. The Humanities at Michigan State University

The author discusses a project called "The Sunflower Symposium," named in honor of Simon Wiesenthal's The Sunflower (1998). The project was a catalyst for discussions on legalized discrimination, the infringement of civil rights, (in)justice, (in)tolerance, and civic responsibility, influencing students to connect the Holocaust to other world events. It proved an effective pedagogic method for examining critically and taking action on important global issues. Evidence of the effectiveness of this message is presented and suggestions for integrating literature into courses are offered.
