ABSTRACTThis study examines the impact of career uncertainty on post-PhD researchers’ experiences. Drawing on an identity-trajectory approach and a qualitative design, we analysed experiences of post-PhDs from the UK and Switzerland. Our findings show that in the course of their work experiences, career uncertainty takes two different forms: intellectual uncertainty and occupational uncertainty. On a daily basis, both forms strongly impact the participants’ work and personal lives and can limit their ability to plan for the future, restrict their developing research expertise and networks and induce tension in trying to reconcile work and personal lives. While often struggling with a blurred institutional status, participants ‘hang tough’ despite their uncertain situation, notably by clinging to the academic researcher identity. Contributing to the previous work on the increasing casualisation of post-PhD positions and the resulting challenges, our study offers new insights into how different aspects of career uncertainty influence post-PhDs’ work and identity. 相似文献

INTRODUCTION: The study of sexual transmitted diseases is more and more frequent in patient with suspicion of sexual abuse, and this help to the final medical diagnosis. Organisms like Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Treponema indicate a sure sexual contact. However the role of the rest of organisms in the sexual abuse is more difficult of specifying. OBJECTIVE: To know the role of the Gardnerella vaginalis in the diagnosis of sexual abuse in patient with this possible diagnosis. METHODS: Retrospective study of 135 girls with suspicion of abuse, visited from May of 1997 to February of 1998. Vaginal swabs were taken from 45 of 135 girls evaluated. RESULTS: In five patients the vaginal culture were positive to Gardnerella. The characteristics of these five patients are described (age, aggressor, type and duration of the abuse, physical exploration and final diagnosis). All our patients were the pubertal or prepubertal girls. In these patients the final diagnosis settled with the clinical history and the physical exploration, without keeping in mind the result of the culture. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to discard sexual abuse in all prepubertal girl with a positive culture with Gardnerella vaginalis, being difficult to specify the value of the Gardnerella in the adolescent patients. 相似文献

We investigated the initial development of reading and spelling in European Portuguese. First-graders, tested in February
and June, had to read and spell words and pseudowords. In February there were regularity and graphemic complexity effects,
indicating that these children relied on grapheme–phoneme conversion. The lexicality effect found in spelling, in June, suggest
that by the end of first grade these children had begun to construct an orthographic lexicon. However, lexical addressing
is not inconsistent with phonological mediation as regularization errors increased between the sessions. Additionally, the
previously reported similarity in global performance of Portuguese and French beginning readers may conceal processing differences
that are related to specific characteristics of the corresponding orthographic codes.

For students and new professionals, this new horizon of needs and opportunities can create some role confusion as traditional direct service functions of individual and group therapy are evolving into indirect services that focus on broader interventions to help create peace. This article seeks to contribute a foundational guide for readers interested in peace psychology. The article provides a brief overview of the peace psychology movement, current trends, and informational sources. Few studies have addressed vocabulary quality in developing writing skill in Spanish. Even less addressed it within the Chilean educational system. The specific objective of this study was to characterize, using a comprehensive set of indicators, the quality of the vocabulary produced by Chilean 4th grade students. Based on a national writing survey, a sample of 2056 texts written by 685 students was collected (narrative, persuasive, and informative texts). Current literature defines lexical quality as a composite of diverse factors that, while distinct, are interrelated. To represent the properties of the vocabulary, a set of indicators were selected: (a) lexical diversity; (b) lexical sophistication; and (c) lexical density. Using multilevel modeling (students and schools as levels 1 and 2) to explain a global writing score we found that diversity was a significant determinant for narrative and persuasive texts, density was a significant determinant for the three genres and sophistication was a significant determinant for narrative and expository text. In addition, indicators related to gender and socioeconomic conditions were only significant determinants of narrative stories. The parts of speech most often used also varied according to the purpose of each text. In all genres, words had a short extension and were very sensitive to the input presented in the stimuli. These results imply a significant challenge to this education system: how to promote the development of vocabulary in all children in order to support language learning. 相似文献

In this paper we map out the debate concerning a new mandate for European education policy based on recent socio-economic, political and educational developments, seen from the perspective of educational researchers located on the European (semi)periphery. The first part of the paper looks at the category 'preparation for the labour market', while the second part concerns itself with the category 'citizenship'. With regard to the former, it is argued that a new mandate for European education policy finds itself inextricably linked to the new education mandate of the new middle class, in a setting of globalisation and, closer to home, European construction. The latter attempts to conceptualise the emergence of new forms of citizenship at a time when the modern social contract suffers a process of transformation (or, what we term, reconfiguration). Based on the distinction between 'attributed citizenship' and 'demanded citizenship', we analyse changes taking place in state regulation as well as explore some of their implications for schooling. 相似文献
