写给新教师

我教书多年,现已退休,但是,我确信自己具有较为丰富的学识,能够跟上时代的发展.在教书期间,我通常都会在学期末请学生们讲一讲他们在学校这一年的情况以及为什么他们喜欢学校等等.我记得学生们说的比较突出的评语是他们喜欢我的幽默感,我的公正性以及我所给他们自由以培养他们的责任感的事实.所以在此我想针对新教师,当然也包括那些有经验的老师,给出以下建议:     

吉米的新鞋

1今天是9月28号,再过两天就是儿子5岁的生日了。他叫吉米,他有着天蓝色的眼睛,卷发,能照亮整个房间的笑容。我跟丈夫库赫,正带着儿子给他买一双高级网球鞋。我们来到鞋店,四处看着架上的鞋。当爹的找到了一双鞋,颜色跟吉米最爱的篮球队的标志色一样。他把鞋拿了过来,儿子的眼睛一下子亮了起来。“我们试一下这双鞋嘛!好吗,妈妈?”我赶忙去找了一双合脚的鞋给吉米,他坐在旁边的凳子上准备试鞋。给他脱鞋时,我喉咙一阵哽噎。接着,我开始给他卸开脚上的护架——那是他在仅16个月大时被诊断为脑瘫后一直箍在脚上的护架(译者注:脑瘫患儿,因缺失正常人的行走与直立能力,常需借助外力支撑行走)。负责给吉米治疗的专家已经跟吉米的医生交流过了,医生说我们对儿子施予的骄傲快乐疗法效果很好,现在吉米一周有几天可以不用箍支架而只需穿鞋子了。吉米拿到他心仪的鞋子,万分欣喜。平常我们在给他买鞋     

An economic perspective on rock concerts and climate change: Should carbon offsets compensating emissions be included in the ticket price?

Musicians, singers and bands can use their popularity to promote various causes and products, either through endorsements or more individual initiatives. Environmental activism is becoming more widespread as humans are trying to tackle and mitigate climate change. In this paper, we ask how best a band can compensate for the carbon emissions generated by fans travelling to its shows. We first report on the various “green” initiatives and practices of the music industry. We then focus on greenhouse gas emissions that result from tours and concerts since they are one of the largest environmental impacts generated by the music industry. We take the perspective of the artist or band wishing to internalize their carbon emissions and present a model of carbon offsets in the context of rock concerts, which amounts to the private provision of a public good. In our model, bands have the option to include offsets in the ticket price or to offer voluntary offsets. To illustrate our point, we present a field study conducted by a Quebec rock band at shows in Montreal and in Europe to show how the artists can reduce the environmental impact of their concert by buying carbon credits equivalent to their fans’ footprint. We show that at 1 % of the ticket price on average, the cost of carbon offsets is marginal and discuss the numerous challenges that arise for those artists wanting to engage in carbon offsetting.

Summary In conclusion, consider that the best directors, the most successful ones, the most powerful ones, do not direct; they orchestrate and conduct. The most common gestures in conducting are circular. A symphony conductor works on a piece of music written by someone else, but the richness comes from the interpretation. Knowing the music is not enough. A conductor must exact the best performance from each player and each instrument. In a symphony, there is no center, no autonomy, no competing forces, only a seamless whole. How can you conduct your work to make your media center one player in the larger orchestra of your institution? How can you harmonize your role within the mission and needs of the university with the support of your clients and supervisors, create beautiful sounds together, get a solo once in a while, and hear a lot of applause? This article is adapted from a keynote address at the Fall conference of the Consortium of College and University Media Centers, Honolulu, HI, October 1991.     

Career Centers and Needs Assessments: Getting the Information You Need to Increase Your Success

Career Centers are experiencing increasing demands to justify the cost of their services, document the effectiveness of their services, increase their use of technology, and provide a broader range of services. Given the limited personnel and funding associated with most Career Centers, and it can seem like an overwhelming set of demands to respond to. This article explores the use of the needs assessment as a tool to provide evidence of effectiveness, justify costs, and make effective decisions about the services they provide. This article will discuss the benefits of conducting a needs assessment, the process of developing and implementing a needs assessment using an needs assessment project conducted at a small, mid-western University.     

University-incubator firm knowledge flows: assessing their impact on incubator firm performance

Technology incubators are university-based technology initiatives that should facilitate knowledge flows from the university to the incubator firms. We thus investigate the research question of how knowledge actually flows from universities to incubator firms. Moreover, we assess the effect of these knowledge flows on incubator firm-level differential performance. Based on the resource-based view of the firm and the absorptive capacity construct, we advance the overarching hypothesis that knowledge flows should enhance incubator firm performance. Drawing on longitudinal and fine-grained firm-level data of 79 technology ventures incubated between 1998 and 2003 at the Advanced Technology Development Center, a technology incubator sponsored by the Georgia Institute of Technology, we find some support for knowledge flows from universities to incubator firms. Our evidence suggests that incubator firms’ absorptive capacity is an important factor when transforming university knowledge into firm-level competitive advantage.     

Reference and Liaison Librarians: Endangered Species or “Vital Partners?” Views of Academic Library Administrators

Abstract

Reference, liaison, subject librarianship: all of these terms traditionally describe a combination of research assistance, instruction, and collection management. This study used structured interviews with 15 librarians at 14 geographically dispersed, medium to large academic institutions to investigate the current state of reference and liaison librarianship. Library administrators’ views are important to understanding the future of this work since they advocate for resources if they see the necessity. Findings included agreement on the goals of the work and the urgent need to communicate its value in the current higher education landscape; however, the specific means of communication and the types of work that being a partner could include varied.     

Educators as Authors: Teaching Beyond the Classroom

This article discusses why educators might consider writing and submitting papers for consideration of publication in professional journals and magazines. A general overview of teachers’ challenges to the writing process and corresponding responses is provided.     

Methodological and Ethical Dilemmas in International Research: school attendance and gender in Ghana

abstract

The paper considers questions of ethics and methodology in international research. An action research project designed for Ghana/UNICEF as part of a consultancy on school attendance is used as a case‐study from which to examine the ethical dilemmas facing consultants and their clients in educational research carried out as part of international aid. Ethical dilemmas of resourcing, ownership, accountability and self‐interest are discussed by the English consultants. It thus has a double purpose. It both contributes to research on school attendance, and also furthers debate about methodology and constraints on it.
