A Librarian-Centered Study of Perceptions of Subject Terms and Controlled Vocabulary

Controlled vocabulary and subject headings in OPAC records have proven to be useful in improving search results. The authors used a survey to gather information about librarian opinions and professional use of controlled vocabulary. Data from a range of backgrounds and expertise were examined, including academic and public libraries, and technical services as well as public services professionals. Responses overall demonstrated positive opinions of the value of controlled vocabulary, including in reference interactions as well as during bibliographic instruction sessions. Results are also examined based upon factors such as age and type of librarian.     

Going the Distance: The Road to the 1984 Olympic Women's Marathon

The 1984 Los Angeles Games hosted, for the first time in Olympic history, a women's marathon race. It took the efforts of several important factions to accomplish the event. First, women runners demonstrated that they were capable of running great distances in increasingly faster times. Second, the popular media publicised those performances, often mitigating athletic commentary with observations about the runners' femininity, attractiveness and relationships with men. Finally, commercial sponsors joined the ranks in this marathon battle to finance important events, running circuits and advocacy groups while simultaneously promoting their own brands of commodity feminism. In the end, it took the coming together of the physical activists, media advocates and corporate champions to accomplish this milestone in sport history.     

Two Sides of the Same Coin

There are distinctions between leadership and management. Each position has its own characteristics and functional activities, but these activities are related and complementary arrangements for coordinating, controlling, and advancing organizational operations. Leaders typically envision and managers implement. However, this does not mean that managers are not capable leaders. In many cases, managers have to be leaders as well as coordinators and controllers of complex transactions.     

The Irony of Authenticity

Authenticity appears to be the value of the moment. It is now the new standard for leadership. The theme is so pervasive that institutions of every sort have tried to lay claim to its virtues. Businesses are spending lavishly for advice on how to make executives and managers more authentic. However, an entrusting acceptance of what this means can have adverse consequences for a young manager's growth and hinder an accomplished executive's impact.
