This study examined the nature of students’ out-of-class involvements with a view to identifying the kinds of involvement
that are most conducive to positive adjustment to university. Students from five Canadian universities completed questionnaires
in November of their first-year at university assessing the quality of their out-of-class involvements and the extent to which
such activities were structured (i.e., supervised, performed regularly, had a goal or purpose). Measures of adjustment to
university were administered in November and March of their first-year. Results indicated that the amount of structure present
in out-of-class activities was positively related to university adjustment. Activity quality was found to mediate the relationship
between activity structure and university adjustment; it seems that activities that are highly structured are related to more
positive outcomes because they tend to provide participants with a high-quality experience. Results are discussed in terms
of the transition to university, and first-year transition intervention programs. 相似文献
The kinematics of a badminton racket during a smash stroke was observed in this study with the purpose of investigating stroke
dynamics and racket behaviour. Motion capture measurements of the racket during several smash strokes performed by three players
of different skill levels indicated a clear increase in racket velocity at impact with increasing skill level. Variations
between translational and rotational contributions to the impact speed could also be seen between the players. The advanced
player produced a much higher peak angular velocity and also relied much less on translation, with a translational velocity
of only 8% of the total velocity versus the 20% for the recreational player. It is proposed that, as an alternative to shuttlecock
speeds, racket head speed measurements can be used as an indicator of performance, and can also provide some insight into
the interaction between the racket and player. 相似文献
This paper describes a research project, “Voices from Manukau”, that investigated the impact of a joint initiative by a university and an institute of technology in New Zealand. The purpose of the initiative was to increase the participation of students traditionally under represented at tertiary-level study, particularly Māori (indigenous people) and individuals from Pacific Island nations. Many of the participants were adults who had not experienced high levels of success during their compulsory period of education and they lived in low socio-economic areas. We found that participation of under-represented groups increased. The “Manukau” students were as successful as other undergraduate students studying at the university. Of particular interest was the high level of success of Māori and Pacific Island students. 相似文献
ABSTRACTVictorian fiction can provide a valuable source of information about society by virtue of its topicality and realistic techniques, influenced by contemporary journalism. In particular, the novels of Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy throw light on literacy practices, including reading aloud. The higher the literacy levels of the novels’ characters, the less reading aloud is reported; and as literacy becomes more widespread through the 19th century, it is commented on increasingly less. Significantly, when instances of reading aloud are depicted, they fulfil purposes that seem to correspond with recognisable present-day scenarios, in which the power of the spoken word resonates. 相似文献
Women use technology to mediate numerous aspects of their professional and personal lives. Yet, few design and create these technologies given that women, especially women of color, are grossly underrepresented in computer science and engineering courses. Decisions about participation in STEM are frequently made prior to high school, and these decisions are impacted by prior experience, interest, and sense of fit with community. Digital Youth Divas is an out-of-school program that uses narrative stories to launch the creation of digital artifacts and support non-dominant middle school girls’ STEM interests and identities through virtual and real-world community. In this article, we discuss the framework of the Digital Youth Divas environment, including our approach to blending narratives into project-based design challenges through on- and offline mechanisms. Results from our pilot year, including the co-design process with the middle school participants, suggest that our narrative-centered, blended learning program design sparks non-dominant girls’ interests in STEM activities and disciplinary identification, and has the potential to mediate girls’ sense of STEM agency, identities, and interests. 相似文献
Maori women teachers in nineteenth‐century New Zealand have been little acknowledged in educational histories, and indeed, in some instances their contributions have been explicitly nullified. Those who have taken leadership roles have been no more visible. This article examines the silencing and exclusion from educational history of a young Maori woman who was both a teacher and a community leader during this period. It identifies the various points at which her role was silenced and suggests that such silencing is a reflection of her position as woman and as Maori, in a missionary/colonial context. In telling her story, this article (re)instates Maata Patene to a position of leadership and agency in the history of New Zealand education. 相似文献
A prestigious reputation is the primary success factor in higher education because it attracts resources necessary to sustain growth. Among research-intensive universities (RIUs), research performance is a key driver of institutional reputation. Achieving an accelerating rate of growth of research performance is the desired objective of all RIUs which, in turn, is contributing to intensification in the competition for research funds. In competitive environments, the use of strategy is widely used to enhance competitive effectiveness. The question arises as to whether some expressions of strategy are more closely associated with increased research performance than others? This paper provides insight into this question by presenting a model demonstrating that the strategic emphases of individual RIUs in the USA are highly correlated to changes in the shares of federally financed research funding actually realized by the institutions.
