Abstract Following fixed-duration exercise of submaximal intensity, caffeine ingestion is associated with an attenuation of the exercise-induced decline in N-formyl-methionyl-phenyl-alanine (f-MLP) stimulated neutrophil oxidative burst. However, the response following high-intensity exhaustive exercise is unknown. Nine endurance-trained male cyclists ingested 6 mg caffeine or placebo per kilogram of body mass 60 min before cycling for 90 min at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption ([Vdot]O2max) and then performing a time-trial requiring an energy expenditure equivalent to 30 min cycling at 70% maximum power output. Time-trial performance was 4% faster in the caffeine than in the placebo trial (P = 0.043). Caffeine was associated with an increased plasma adrenaline concentration after 90 min of exercise (P = 0.046) and immediately after the time-trial (P = 0.02). Caffeine was also associated with an increased serum caffeine concentration (P < 0.01) after 90 min of exercise and immediately after the time-trial, as well as 1 h after the time-trial. However, the f-MLP-stimulated neutrophil oxidative burst response fell after exercise in both trials (P = 0.002). There was no effect of caffeine on circulating leukocyte or neutrophil counts, but the lymphocyte count was significantly lower on caffeine (20%) after the time-trial (P = 0.003). Our results suggest that high-intensity exhaustive exercise negates the attenuation of the exercise-induced decrease in neutrophil oxidative burst responses previously observed when caffeine is ingested before exercise of fixed duration and intensity. This may be associated with the greater increase in adrenaline concentration observed in the present study. 相似文献

Usability is critical to the development of a user-friendly digital textbook platform interface, yet thorough research on
interface development based on usability principles is in short supply. This study addresses that need by looking at usability
attributes and corresponding design elements from a learning perspective. The researchers used a student survey, log files,
and an expert heuristic evaluation to analyze needs for revision in the user interface of the existing Korea Education Research
Information Service digital textbook platform. After using suggestions derived from this analysis to develop a new platform
prototype, they tested its user interface for usability through a cognitive walkthrough and a formative evaluation. The results
show that the usability design elements identified through the use of this iterative design and evaluation model were essential

Bringing Up Girls in Science (BUGS) was an afterschool program for 4th and 5th grade girls that provided authentic learning
experiences in environmental science as well as valuable female mentoring opportunities in an effort to increase participants’
academic achievement in science. BUGS participants demonstrated significantly greater amounts of gain in science knowledge
as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in Science (ITBS-S). The original BUGS participants and contrasts have now completed
high school and entered college, allowing researchers to assess the long-term impact of the BUGS program. Fourteen former
BUGS participants completed two instruments to assess their perceptions of science and science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM) careers. Their results were compared to four contrast groups composed entirely of females: 12 former BUGS
contrasts, 10 college science majors, 10 non-science majors, and 9 current STEM professionals. Results indicate that BUGS
participants have higher perceptions of science careers than BUGS contrasts. There were no significant differences between
BUGS participants, Science Majors, and STEM professionals in their perceptions of science and STEM careers, whereas the BUGS
contrast group was significantly lower than BUGS participants, Science Majors, and STEM Professionals. Additional results

This study examined the levels of pedagogical knowledge and skills as perceived by student teachers who were enrolled in the Post Graduate Diploma in Education program at the National Institute of Education, Singapore, from the beginning of their initial teacher preparation program to the end of their first year of teaching. Their perceptions were assessed using the Pedagogical Knowledge and Skills in Teaching (PKST) survey which comprised six factors, namely, Student Learning, Lesson Planning, Instructional Support, Accomodating Diversity, Classroom Management, and Care and Concern. A sample of 812 student teachers participated in the study. The MANOVA conducted showed that there were significant increases in both their pedagogical knowledge and skills in teaching in all six factors from the start of their initial teacher preparation (ITP) program till the end of their first year of teaching. However, between the exit from the program to the end of the first year of teaching, they only perceived that their level of pedagogical knowledge in classroom management and care and concern continued to increase significantly. In the case of self-perceived skills, their level increased significantly between entry and exit of the program for all factors, except for care and concern, while the increase between the exit and first year of teaching was significant for all six factors. These results may have implications for preservice teacher education and this will be discussed in this article. 相似文献

However, little is known about what sources appraisal practitioners utilize to collect user and use information. This study is the first to explore and analyze the genres of user and use information sources utilized as appraisal tools. It applies the concepts of genre, genre repertoire, and structuration theory to examine the relationships between the sources of user and use information and the organizational structure and function of U.S. state archives and records management programs. Sepsis is an adverse systemic inflammatory response caused by microbial infection in blood. This paper reports a simple microfluidic approach for intrinsic, non-specific removal of both microbes and inflammatory cellular components (platelets and leukocytes) from whole blood, inspired by the invivo phenomenon of leukocyte margination. As blood flows through a narrow microchannel (20 × 20 µm), deformable red blood cells (RBCs) migrate axially to the channel centre, resulting in margination of other cell types (bacteria, platelets, and leukocytes) towards the channel sides. By using a simple cascaded channel design, the blood samples undergo a 2-stage bacteria removal in a single pass through the device, thereby allowing higher bacterial removal efficiency. As an application for sepsis treatment, we demonstrated separation of Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae spiked into whole blood, achieving high removal efficiencies of ∼80% and ∼90%, respectively. Inflammatory cellular components were also depleted by >80% in the filtered blood samples which could help to modulate the host inflammatory response and potentially serve as a blood cleansing method for sepsis treatment. The developed technique offers significant advantages including high throughput (∼1 ml/h per channel) and label-free separation which allows non-specific removal of any blood-borne pathogens (bacteria and fungi). The continuous processing and collection mode could potentially enable the return of filtered blood back to the patient directly, similar to a simple and complete dialysis circuit setup. Lastly, we designed and tested a larger filtration device consisting of 6 channels in parallel (∼6 ml/h) and obtained similar filtration performances. Further multiplexing is possible by increasing channel parallelization or device stacking to achieve higher throughput comparable to convectional blood dialysis systems used in clinical settings. 相似文献

Drawing upon van Eijck and Roth’s notion of “place as chronotope,” this review paper discusses historical consideration of
place as it assists us to conceptualize place in its collective, political, and dialogical nature. In a place, we are positioned
amidst of the multiplicity of histories and narratives within ever shifting various contexts of place. Historical consideration
acknowledges multiplicity and marginalization in a place, thus, legitimizes multiple place histories and invites multiple
narratives to engage in dialogical process of place. With historical consideration, place identity can be approached and framed
in its collective, dialogical nature within larger social, political contexts of place. The paper further suggests that place
based education should be able to acknowledge and invite multiple histories and marginalized voices of students into creating

The transverse free vibration of nanobeams subjected to an initial axial tension based on nonlocal stress theory is presented. It considers the effects of nonlocal stress field on the natural frequencies and vibration modes. The effects of a small scale parameter at molecular level unavailable in classical macro-beams are investigated for three different types of boundary conditions: simple supports, clamped supports and elastically-constrained supports. Analytical solutions for transverse deforma- tion and vibration modes are derived. This study examined Singaporean parents’ perspectives on how much they valued major curriculum skill areas for their children with disabilities. Parents were also asked to indicate whether they expected priority skill items within the curriculum areas to be performed with assistance or independently. The results showed that the parents of children with moderate and severe disabilities indicated the highest priority for self-help functional life skills, followed by community-based functional life skills, social relationship skills, and functional academics. Parents of children with mild disabilities indicated the highest priority for self-help functional life skills, followed by community-based functional skills, functional academics, and social relationship skills. The results also showed that parents’ relative ratings of the other skill areas besides self-help skills were influenced by the level of disability of their children. The milder the disability, the higher the relative parental ratings and expectations for independent performance of social relationship skills, functional academics, and community-based life skills. Conversely, the more severe the disability, the lower the relative ratings of these skills and expectations for independent performance compared with self-help functional life skills. 相似文献
