In education, case studies have been employed as a major pedagogical means to engage students with realistic materials and
practical problems. The usefulness and success of case studies have been documented in literature. In this paper, we move
the case study and its technical affordance a step further toward more authentic or realistic learning and toward communities
of practice. Drawing on current intellectual achievement in education, developmental psychology and computer-supported collaborative
learning, this paper proposes four requirements for interactive case study libraries, focusing on authentic learning, social
interaction, resource accumulation, and communities of practice. With a usability engineering case study library as an example,

This study investigated the understanding of science process skills (SPS) of 329 science teachers from 52 primary schools selected by random sampling. The understanding of SPS was measured in terms of conceptual and operational aspects of SPS using an instrument called the Science Process Skills Questionnaire (SPSQ) with a Cronbach’s alpha reliability of 0.88. The findings showed that the teachers’ conceptual understanding of SPS was much weaker than their practical application of SPS. The teachers’ understanding of SPS differed by their teaching qualifications but not so much by their teaching experience. Emphasis needs to be given to both conceptual and operational understanding of SPS during pre-service and in-service teacher education to enable science teachers to use the skills and implement inquiry-based lessons in schools. 相似文献

In this paper we critically review recent developments in policies, practices and philosophies pertaining to the mediation
between science and the public within the EU and the UK, focusing in particular on the current paradigm of Public Understanding
of Science and Technology (PEST) which seeks to depart from the science information-transmission associated with previous
paradigms, and enact a deliberative democracy model. We first outline the features of the current crisis in democracy and
discuss deliberative democracy as a response to this crisis. We then map out and critically review the broad outlines of recent
policy developments in public-science mediation in the EU and UK contexts, focusing on the shift towards the deliberative-democratic
model. We conclude with some critical thoughts on the complex interrelationships between democracy, equality, science and
informal pedagogies in public-science mediations. We argue that science and democracy operate within distinct value-spheres
that are not necessarily consonant with each other. We also problematize the now common dismissal of information-transmission
of science as inimical to democratic engagement, and argue for a reassessment of the role and importance of informal science
learning for the “lay” public, provided within the framework of a deliberative democracy that is not reducible to consensus
building or the mere expression of opinions rooted in social and cultural givens. This, we argue, can be delivered by a model
of PEST that is creative and experimental, with both educational and democratic functions. 相似文献

Exposure to arsenic has been associated with several health hazards. Worldwide the main reason for chronic human intoxication
with arsenic is intake of contaminated drinking water. Air acetylene type of atomic absorption spectrophotometer in combination
with hydride generator accessory was used to analyze arsenic level in 25 water samples collected from 25 booster pumping stations
and 313 water samples collected from tap water supply of 62 areas of Delhi. Results were analyzed using SPSS and Barlett’s
Chi Square Test. Mean arsenic level detected in water samples collected from booster pumping stations was 0.00976 ppm (Range
0.000–0.017 ppm, Standard Deviation 0.006 and Standard error of Mean 0.00118). Maximum arsenic level (0.017 ppm) was found
in water samples of booster pumping stations of Mehrauli, Punjabi Bagh and Ramjas Road. Mean arsenic level detected in samples
collected from tap water supply was 0.013 ppm (Range 0–0.0430 ppm, Standard Deviation 0.00911 and Standard error of Mean 0.000515).
In water samples of 42 areas arsenic level detected was exceeding WHO/EPA permissible limit of 0.01 ppm (10 ppb). The mean
arsenic level detected in water samples of booster pumping station was within WHO/EPA permissible limit while mean arsenic
level detected in tap water samples was marginally higher. Mixing of ground water and contamination through broken or leaking
channel could be the possible reason of higher arsenic level in tap water. Continuous monitoring of quality of drinking water
is required particularly in view of water contamination caused by industrial waste and uncontrolled ground water extraction. 相似文献

Immunization with a proper dose of an antigenic stimulus leads to cell proliferation and antibody response of circulating
lymphocytes. We have previously observed that Secondary immunized spleenocytes resist ceramide-mediated apoptosisin vitro. Our present study is aimed at investigating thein vivo effect of immunization on apoptosis. Mice were subjected to either Primary or Secondary dose with Tetanus Toxoid. Unimmunized
spleenocytes served as controls. Unimmunized, Primary and Secondary immunized mice were later exposed to chemotherapeutic
drugs such as Etoposide/Methotrexate/Vincristine to induce apoptosis. Apoptosis was studied by using the Feulgen reaction
on 5μ thin parafin sections of spleen. It was observed that Secondary immunized mice showed a lower percentage of apoptosis
as compared to Primary or Unimmunized mice that was subjected to either of the chemotherapeutic drugs. It was thus concluded
that Secondary immunization inhibits the process of chemotherapeutic drug induced apoptosis in vivo. 相似文献

As a special geological phenomenon, the character of collapsible loess foundation is collapsible when penetrated by water. This character leads to the soil losing load bearing capacity largely and may lead to foundation failure. Pile is a popular foundation used in collapsible loess. The squeezed branch and plate pile is a new type of pile developed in recent years and has not be used in a project before. In this paper three squeezed branch and plate piles are tested in collapsible loess after immersion processing.
