One Tool for Many Tasks: Integrating Ipads into the Third-Year Learning Experience

Librarians worked with faculty in the School of Medicine to integrate iPad tablets into the third-year pediatric clerkship. The use of the technology allowed students instant access to information in the clinical setting and simplified the management of the course. In addition, a variety of tablet and e-reader devices were purchased for patron check-out. Library management of the devices is discussed. Use of the devices is described, and student reactions are presented.     

Sex on prime‐time in the 90's

Although the proportion of network prime‐time programs with sexual images decreased somewhat during the 1990's, the overall message about sex did not change. Sex is often found in a humorous context—four often programs include humorous sexual references. Sex is most often found in dramas, followed closely by situation comedies. Moreover, one‐fifth of prime‐time programs have sexual content that is categorized as gratuitous (unwarranted) to the plot. Viewers do not seem to favor programs with sexual content — there was no support for the hypothesis that programs with sexual content would have higher Nielsen ratings than programs without sexual content.     

The soaps: What's on and who cares?

This two‐pronged study analyzed soap opera content, centering on demographics, problems, conversations and sex behaviors, and surveyed soap viewers to determine viewing motives, involvement, and possible effects of soap viewing.     

Learning to Love Your Discovery Tool: Strategies for Integrating a Discovery Tool in Face-To-Face,Synchronous, and Asynchronous Instruction

Some librarians embrace discovery tools while others refuse to use them. This lack of consensus can have consequences for student learning when there is inconsistent use, especially in large-scale instruction programs. The authors surveyed academic librarians whose institutions have a discovery tool and who teach information literacy classes in order to identify barriers to using them and to develop strategies to effectively integrate them into instruction. The authors used the survey results and recent studies on the research habits of undergraduates to propose strategies for integrating the discovery tool at the programmatic level in a more meaningful and sustainable way.     

What makes a school Catholic?

This research aims to look at how a group of primary head teachers’ in the North West of England perceive the Catholic nature of their schools and how they give their account of Catholic education for twenty-first century Britain. They go on to describe their feelings about the mission of their school. The head teachers’ views of how they identified their school’s Catholicism are critiqued in the light of Catholic Church teaching on the nature of Catholic schools and compared to academic and theological models of Catholic education.     

The preservice teachers are watching: Framing and reframing the field experience

In this article we employ Sizers’ (1999) school- and classroom-based lenses for observation and apply them to the events and interactions that teacher education students see during school-based field experiences. Our data include online reflections and discussions among 33 students enrolled in a teacher education program at a large, public university. Our findings show that participants engaged in a complex series of framing(s) and reframing(s) to make sense of their experience. Further, we show how computer-mediated communication tools can promote framing and reflection among preservice teachers and enhance the face-to-face instruction university teacher educators provide.     

Teacher efficacy in student engagement,instructional management,student stressors,and burnout: A theoretical model using in-class variables to predict teachers' intent-to-leave

The models presented here posit a complex relationship between efficacy in student engagement and intent-to-leave that is mediated by in-class variables of instructional management, student behavior stressors, aspects of burnout, and job satisfaction. Using data collected from 631 teachers, analyses provided support for the two models that predicted teachers' intent-to-leave. To enhance generalizability, this study also tested whether the structural coefficients were invariant across teacher gender and grade level. With one exception, the models appeared largely invariant across gender and grade level. Supplementing the structural models, measurement invariance and equality of latent factor means were also explored.     

A Fine-Wire Electromyographic Investigation of the Gluteus Minimus and Gluteus Medius Muscles

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the functions of the gluteus minimus and gluteus medius muscles through the use of fine-wire electromyography. Electrical activity of the gluteus minimus and gluteus medius muscles of 13 subjects, six females and seven males, was recorded during a series of basic anatomical movements. Results showed that the gluteus minimus functioned as an abductor, medical rotator, extensor, and in some cases a flexor of the thigh. The gluteus medius functioned as an abductor, extensor, and medical rotator in six of the 13 subjects. It also exhibited some activity during flexion in five of the subjects tested.
